Haibane Renmei, because of its unique theme, how it leaves things open to the imagination while explaining what really matters, and how it strums at your emotions so easily.
And you will shed tears of scarlet.

Two favorites, really.

Fruits Basket:
It gives me the warm fuzzies, it makes me laugh, it makes me cry. It was the first series anime I ever watched and it's the one that made me an anime fan. Very comforting show to watch when you're depressed.

Excel Saga:
Crazy humor, tons of variety in plots, lots of great characters. It feels like it was written for adults instead of high school kids. Unpredictable and insane, yet makes just the right amount of sense. Perverted without being gross, violent without being either gory or boring. Doesn't EVER take itself seriously.

Neon Genesis Evangelion. It makes you think, plus is very deep.. And not many ppl understand it. Every little detail added in Evangelion was added for a reason and I luv it <333 Evangelion is and will always be my favourite Anime. ^^ Plus it is just so weird @_@ And I'd add more but, I don't feel like it.

I guess I should go for Elfen Lied, Loveless and Serial Experiments Lain!

Elfen Lied goes from one extreme to another in a very gruesome way. The contrast is absolutely beautiful! Plus, I love it how it plays around with the taboos  and serial-killer-little-girls are absolutely cute :D

I'm not so much of a fan of the Loveless anime when compared to the manga, but it's still one of the best ones I've seen.. As a romance story, it's like no other. What could I call it? Experimental/alternative romance? Anyways, the story is very good and (in the manga) very multi-layered, and I love it how it's build on the characters rather than linear plot.. Plus, it's actually a yaoi-series you can take seriously 8-)

Serial Experiments Lain has a lot of depth going on. I appreciate that. Plus, the theories it's build on are disturbingly close to how I look at the world.. Anyways, I'm a sucker for philosophical theories and Lain has lots 8-) The story is complex, emotional and multi-layered like no other.. Gotta love its mood 8-)

GunGrave (anime)

I have to say, this anime made me laugh and cry. It has the most interesting and in depth characters that make them very human (personality wise. Seeing as some are zombies...). Plus the plot line is complicated and keeps you guessing. It's unpredictable, is heart-touching, and action packed. You can really get attached to the characters.

Yeah, Elfen Lied reallhy does go with the taboo. ^_^ That's a good summary for Elfen Lied.

Anime: Saiyuki

Reason: I absolutely LOVE the characters, the comedy, the English dub (better than the sub, too), the openings and endings have great music and great artwork, and the anime in general has great artwork, the guys are HOT, and the anime always cheers me up when the guys are making jokes!

Anime : Twelve Kingdoms

it has everything I want to see in an anime series, intriguing plot, great character development and enough action to keep me interested. Theres lack of humor or romance but those are not important to me.

Anime: 5 Centimeters Per Second

Reason: I'm a sucker for a good romantic anime...i truly wanted to cry but...the tears never just came out. The artwork is wonderful [well, i consider it good enough for me] and the storyline is just like any old soap opera. It's just so saddening and happy...and...i dunno...but it's definately a good watch!
