Anime: Gunbuster / Diebuster
Well, first off, these are to be considered 2 different shows in my opinion, and probably Diebuster is better off not being a sequel to Gunbuster (even though it kinda is).
Gunbuster: This show is undoubtedly filled with almost every cliche in the book at some point, yet manages to be deep and poignant on other levels. Also, it has a pretty cliche story, but I've never seen it done with such MAGNITUDE. The epic feel of it is quite astounding, and they did an awesome job at blending the cliche big robot stuff with realistic technology. I've never been one for big robot shows at all, (and I still don't like the actual design of the robots) but I love the ships/weapons/technology in this show. It's simply amazing, and a pretty good look at how things might be one day.
Diebuster: Backs up the whole idea of magnitude. The story in this one is a bit weaker I think, and hardcore fans of the original Gunbuster were pretty dissapointed, but I really liked this also, for the same reasons as Gunbuster. Again, the technology shown and the magnitude of the weaponry/battles is what makes this just awesome to watch. I mean,
Nono splits a planet in half, and Lark pulls one through timespace and throws it at the space monster. And did I mention the space monster has a black hole, which it controls with it's own free will?
Another of my favorite shows (I like it better than these two) is FLCL, for the same reasons. The thing about FLCL is that they insinuate things like this instead of show them outright. You get the idea that Haruko is far more powerful than she lets on...she's confident in every situation. It's just left up to the viewer to imagine what she's capable of. (Not to mention what Atomsk / Medical Mechanica are capable of).
Good stuff....we need moar Gainax. (Gurren Lagann, while rather rediculous, is also a really fun thing to watch.)
