Tenchi Muyo! OVA 3 news

Postby Garylisk » Thu Dec 12, 2002 5:55 pm

We already knew it was starting production, and that they were already moving along in script writing and such, we we didn't know anything more than that.. Well now we do.
The rumors that the OVA will be focusing on the Choushin war (The war between Washu, Tsunami, and Tokimi) is true, and was confirmed a long time ago, but it's worth restating here..

The new information is that they have announced the three main staffmembers behind the show.
Original concept and Supervising Editor: Masaki Kajishima (Also was concept and Editor for Tenchi Muyo OVA 1 and 2, as well as concept, editor, and script writer for Dual: Parallel Trouble Adventure)
Director: Kenichi Yatagai (Also directed some episodes of Tenchi Muyo OVA 2 and the Macross 2 movie)
Script writer: Yosuke Kuroda (Also wrote the scripts for some episodes of Tenchi Muyo OVA 1 and 2, and was script writer for Trigun)

So yeah, look forward to it... they really have some AWESOME people working on the third OVA!

And let me restate one more thing just to keep questions at bay... Tenchi does NOT choose one of the girls in OVA3! This is CONFIRMED! There will be NO CHOICE MADE :P
However, it is suggested that Tenchi will choose when and if OVA 4 is made. (So yay.. Speculation can still continue :P I love speculation... )

Thanks gary. Well why can't they just bring back the original animators. It seems like everytime they made a series after Tenchi universe the animation quality dropped another notch. Tenchi muyo gxp while not as bad as tokyo is really really cheaply drawn. I wonder what happened?

OK well, they are probably going to have the original animation staff for the OVA.

I don't see how you can say that GXP is cheaply drawn. Not only is it full of gorgeous CG for all the space stuff, but the characters move A LOT! It's full blown eye-popping smooooooth digital animation.

As for the plot... Lots of people don't like GXP.. oh well... For those of you who are not enjoying it, wait til episode 10. If episode 10 doesn't hook you on the show, there's not much hope for you.

As for a north american release, there's no announcement yet, but everyone is figuring that Funimation has the liscense.. they just have not said yet. At AXNY, there was no official announcement, but when people asked anime reps of other companies who would be likely to try and pick it up, they said "We don't have it.. I think Funimation might have got it." so who knows.

All I can say is that after watching all 26 episodes of GXP all the way thru twice now (Raw.. but then again, I have to in order to translate heh.. some episodes I've seen in excess of 10 times du to translation...) that GXP is a good show. It's VERY FUNNY! Don't expect a serious plotline to come out too strongly unless the episode features the show's main villain, Tarant. (Who first appears in episode 10). Do expect romantic-comedy hijinks though, as a grand total of EIGHT WOMEN fight over Seina's heart ;P Oh it gets insane... INSANE I TELL YOU!

Eh, I see that all the time... sounds to me like you're just spoiled. :P Remember, this is a TV series, not an OVA. the budget is inherently less, and the number of episodes is much greater. They have to take shortcuts here and there.

Of course, that didn't stop GXP from breaking Japanese viewer ratings records. It got a whopping 4.2% I believe, which is incredible. That means that 4.2% of Japan's population was watching it. Given that it comes on at 2am on Tuesday morning, and that after Shin Tenchi Muyo, you would think that people would be wary of Tenchi on TV... but all the same, it got 4.2%. That's saying something, for sure.

Those OVA discs you see are a North American re-release of OVA 1 and OVA 2.
The reasoning behind this is that since the first two OVAs are only available on DVD in a box set form, which usually sells for anywhere from 100-130 dollars, these DVDs that are being released might be easier for someone to buy one at a time instead of having to splooge on the whole set.
Also, if you have the Tenchi box set like me, you probably know that the episodes are not split up into chapters.. each episode is a chapter, rather than being split up by opening, part a, part b, ending. I think the new discs will be split up like that.

Also, for the true Tenchi fan, these discs will be a good thing to buy even if you already own the DVD box set. As a collector, you'll want them anyway. As a viewer, you'll like that the video on these discs will be MPEG-2 instead of MPEG-1 which was used on the box set so they could fit all 13 episodes on 2 discs.
And then of course, we are all hoping for maybe some new special features... textless opening and ending... etc... And maybe, just maybe.. a new version of the Tenchi Encyclopedia! That would be awesome! :)

Furthermore, you have to think.. with OVA 3 coming out, Pioneer will probably want to, at first, release OVA 3 on a pair of (Or maybe even 3) discs, since it's rumored that OVA 3 will be 6 episoeds. So, releasing the first two OVAs is kind of liek a precursor to the release of OVA 3.. it also suggests to us that, even though Funimation (probably...) has the rights to GXP, that Pioneer is not giving up their rights to the Tenchi OVA.

Finally, and I am hoping for this wholeheartedly... after everything is out in America, maybe they'll make a new box set with the complete trilogy. That would kick major ass :)
Of cours,e then again, that depends on the news from Japan... Appearently, if OVA 3 does well, Kajishima wants to make OVA 4. He's hinted at it a couple times, and so have his staff people.
Most fans think that OVA 3 will be more action oriented, as it focuses on the Choushin war, and then OVA 4 will end up being like the beginning of OVA 2, with character developing episodes, as well as maybe some romantic aspects (Since the AIC staff have jokingly said, in response to people asking if Tenchi will choose a girl, they said "Maybe in OVA 4")
And then of course, in OVA 4, we can look forward to some GXP cameos since OVA 3 is pre-GXP, but OVA 4 will be post GXP. :) Hehe! Maybe we'll get to see...

GXP SPOILERS!!!!!!!!

YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!

..Seina's kids. :P God knows how many he would have by that time, having been married to 8 women in Episode 26 of GXP :P

END OF SPOILERS!!!!!
END OF SPOILERS!!!!!!!!
YOU CAN READ THIS PART NOW!

Anyway, time will tell. They've been keeping a tight lid on OVA 3, but since we now know who the staff is, hopefully we'll get some word on what it will be like plotwise. :)

Also, one more thing I'd like to add... if you'd like to keep up to date on Tenchi news and fun, the best way is to take part in, or at least read, the BBS at http://www.aicanime.com
THey have a forum for Tenchi Muyo and Tenchi Muyo GXP, and most of the senior members (Myself included) are very informed and up to date on all the latest buzz.
Also, the "Lounge" forum there... I'll be honest, not to badmouth this forum or anytihg, but I have a lot more fun there than I do here in "General Off-Topic" :P There's a lot less BS ... heh... :P
One last palce that has an awesome forum with Tenchi fans is The Ayeka Fan Club at http://come.to/ayeka - Even if you don't like Ayeka much (I love her to death by the way. Especially after seeing all the info that Ayeka fans have... she's really a character you can sympathize with, you just have to give her a chance!) the forum is still fun and full of good stuff. (Also, that forum is usually the first place that gets image scans, translations, and other such fun stuff from Punistation's massive collection of Tenchi paraphanelia. I consider myself a giant Tenchi otaku, but she just makes me look like a pipsqueak.. I mean, talk about a collector! Wow!) :P
