Do you think there are levels in japanimation

Postby ryu amata » Tue Dec 03, 2002 11:22 am

Am I the only one that thinks there are levels to the types of japanimation people watch? I believe there are atleast 3 levels.

The kid animes - you got pokemon, yugioh, beyblade, etc.

Then beginners or intermediate - Dragonball, dragonball Z, Sailormoon, etc.

Then advanced who get into Akira, Trigun, Evangelion, and i also like 3x3 eyes.
Agree or Disagree?

I don't agree fully. Yeah, Evangelion is a hell of a lot more artistic than yugioh, but I don't think there is a lot of advancement. They both are there to entertain an audience...its just they are really different audiences.

>.< I don't agree with you 100%. I think it's just the target market that the companies are trying to apeal to. For instance some one could like shows from each catagory as you put it. I mean, I like Akira and 3x3 eyes but I also like Dragonball(Z) and yu-gi-oh, though not as much. I suppose it depends on personal preferences. Just because they may be of different styles or generes doesn't dampen the quality, I suppose.

What i mean is most people that start watching is because of those shows. Then after time work up to the others. I know most of the anime that i prefer are rare and hard to find. I digress any other opinions.

Well to answer b3atr3d's question. I live in a small town in Georgia and there aren't many places to buy this stuff so when i find it it is usually over priced or it's the cut version and its no fun. I'm new to this forum but i have read a lot of the topics and things here and found several good anime i have never even heard of. Just for example... well nevermind i can't remember many of the names. Anyways they are difficult to find so i call them rare.

As for Aetherfukz I know most things can be and are put into such categories i just wanted to know how oothers thought and if they agreed with me.

Paizuri thats what i mean to a point, like i said i have been reading a lot and i was reading the topic on what got you started watching anime and it seemed to me that most of the people there went through similar stages. So i was curious.

I believe that he means less available. Not aired on US/UK TV for instance, not yet available on DVD... not even dubbed yet, etc. Ones that you either have to pay for or download, both can be pretty limited depending on your circumstances.

I'm a 16 year old living in the UK.

So what I get on TV is: Evangelion, DBZ, Gundam Wing, Tenchi Muyo/Universe/In Tokyo, Yugi Oh, Pokemon, Zoids, Martian Successor Nadesico, Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Beyblade, and various anime movies.

I've bought: Ranma S1-4+movies, DBZ specials, Street Fighter Movies, Samurai X, Bebop.

Have downloaded on my poor little 56k: Excel (urgh), Love Hina, Trigun(again, urgh).

I don't really categorise them in any way like Ryu-mata, only their genres. Just like any other TV.

I think you are over-simplifying.

Anime is as complex and varied as American Movies.

Some anime are just made for marketing and entertainment.. some are more artistic

some are made for purposes beyond making money

It's a complicated issue... one made more complicated because the appretiation of art is subjective.

I mean... if someone sees a painting and says "it's crap"... well... sure, they can feel that way... but if they have no grasp of art and the language of art (and the history of art) is that opinion very valid?

Anyway... yes... I think there are levels in anime... but it is MUCH more complicated then the levels you propose.

Some people would, but as Milo said, opinions are subjective.

:? ...wasn't DBZ made for an older crowd? I mean didn't they edit out all the 'inapropriate' parts? I heard Vegeta had a *cough* potty mouth?

He does, infact most do. I think it gets better in GT but, ether way i wouldn't call it a kid show its just something that catches the eye yet it isn't... i don't know how to explain it. It just doesn't seem to be up to the quality of alot of the others. Its not as radical a change from some american animations to me. This ofcourse is all my opinions.

As i said in the beginning, "in atleast" i understand there are many many ways to classify. this was just one of my personal thoughts. I could never classify all anime iin these three groups. Or in any number really.
