Well, THAT was embarrasing...

This little story contains Perfect Blue spoilers. You have been warned.

I am currently home for Thanksgiving break. Now, earlier tonight, I decided to watch Perfect Blue again (the video quality of it is crappy, plus I hate how the subtitles pop up too early at some points, but that's an entirely different issue altogether). I waited until my parents were in bed (they decided to hit the sack early), and my 13 year old sister was busy. About 15 minutes into it, my sister came in. She sat down and started watching it with me. I decided to let her watch some of it, thinking she would get bored before the rape scene came up. She didn't. Now, about five minutes before the rape scene, my dad came in the room. Before the rape scene itself came on, I informed my sister of what was coming up. She decided to stay. My dad said nothing. In addition, the characters had been talking about it directly, so they both had plenty of warning of what was coming up. It started, and my sister tried to hide her face. Dad asked me to turn it off if it was going to get worse than that and, thinking of the full-frontal porno shoots, I decided to just turn it off.

God, that was embarrasing. He asked her if she was ok (she's fine, my sis is tough) and gave me a little speech about how just because she says she can handle it, doesn't mean she can. I agree with him, but he was in the room too. He could have said something. Oh, well. She'll be fine.

Seeing that scene probably won't do anything to stop the anime-as-porno jokes my parents like to make from time to time, though... (the reason I waited until I THOUGHT they were going to be asleep...) Arrrgh.

I just felt the need to share this story. I was kind of embarrased to be honest, but dai jobu. (My romanji approximation of what I believe means "It'll be alright")

Ugh. It's for this reason that I hate watching anime at home when I don't have my personal TV and DVD player with me. >_<

That kinda sounds like the initiation of my mom into anime. I was (and my siblings) were most likely much older than you and yours when my mom first saw us watching nudity in anime. It was Ranma OAV where girl type Ranma is trying to turn back into guy with Ryoga in the bathroom of the Pheonix episode. Probably the most blatant nudity in all the Ranma OVA's and she came in the livingroom. I was 21 or so, and we tried to explain the insignifigance of it..still..no one like your mom to make you blush over casual anime nudity.

Just tonight I was showing my little brother (he's married so I use the term loosely) the Otaku Vengeance Pokemon amv. My mom still hasn't been acclimated to languge either ^_~ She left the room with the funniest look on her face :D

Actually, Misty, I am 20, 21 in February. I have one bro and one sis, 15 and 12 (she's not 13, I got her age wrong earlier. I'm a bad big brother... :( )

As for the OV pokemon video, I once played that when my mom was in the room just to see her reaction. I believe her exact words were "What in the world are you listening to?" She never did watch the video itself...

Wel, it could be worse. It could have beel a different "Blue" anime that was playing...

Probably would be worse for you:

Parents almost always walk in when the scenes with nudity in them appear. They must have some kind of radar. I was watching Outlaw star with my sis + my dad decided to walk in. Unfortunatly for me it was the hot springs episode, so it had nudity pretty much the whole way through. It was the first time I watched that episode so I didn't know what to expect. He actually stood there and watched the whole thing. To my suprise he laughed at the lizard woman and all he said about the rest was "that's what all men are like" when they started talking about getting naughty footage of the woman who lived on the mountain

No one in my family understands my fascination with anime. I get so mad when they call them "cartoons," and you can be certain they do. Apparently it's amusing to them that a 20 year old guy would watch "cartoons." And anyway, what's wrong with normal cartoons, anyway? Invader Zim and Powerpuff Girls come to mind :P
My favorite comment was made by my brother, when he said "Turn the sound off, it's annoying. If you can't understand what they're saying, why do you even bother with sound?" GAAAHH!!! There's so many things to say to contradict that statement that I didn't even know where to begin. It's even worse when he finds my small collection of H vids

I just try and gauge who will be around when I'm watching anime, and whether they'll tweak out about anything in that particular one. And I will shut something off at the NEAREST hint of trouble. ;) I'd rather just watch it later than have an embarrassing "what the hell was that" conversation.

No big deal, really, since I can always watch things later or in another room.

But see, that sort of thinking requires common sense, something I seem to lack. I can seriously be a real airhead sometimes. It's quite embarrassing. I'm not even blonde!

That's why I normally watch anime in my room, by myself, where I don't have to explain my actions to people. I also usually try to be careful about watching anything "questionable" in the living room. This time, it just kind of went wonky. -_-

I need more otaku to hang out with here at home... bah.

Lol, that happens all the time to me. I don't really care anymore because my parents just don't care what we watch. I was about 12 when I watched Ninja Scroll, and my step-dad came in during one of the more... explicit scenes. And then he came in during some of the more twisted parts of EoE. He still thinks anime is stupid though. The only good things on TV, to him, are the History channel and war documentaries. So I had him watch Now and Then, Here and There along with some other somewhat war-related animes. But to no avail. Meh... he can remain ignorant. His loss. :)
