Anime Discount DVD

Postby Red Wolf » Sun Nov 03, 2002 11:39 am

I've been hunting for a good online source of both English dubbed and just subbed anime DVDs. I've run across Anime Discount DVD and I was wondering if anyone here had any experience, good or bad, with this group. They are located at http://www.discountanimedvd.com if anyone was curious.[/url]

The latest bootleg DVD I've seen has been the first "Chobits" volume with 9 episodes on it, I believe.

I did a search for "Chobits," and sure enough, it looks like all they have it volume one (all that's out so far in this specific bootleg series) and it looks exactly like the one I know of.

That's the best help I can give you :D

Bootleg ahoy.

Bootlegs are no good. Though actually it looks like they may be duping R1 discs as well since some have english dubs on them.

For legit discs it's hard to beat bestprices.com, also therightstuf.com sells quite a bit at a fair price.

I thought it looked too good, just wanted to check around. Even if quality wasn't an issue I'd still like to buy legit...I'll be in enough trouble for making AMVs out of the DVDs :D

Someone should think about posting a guide to buying anime.

Does anyone know the best (as far as low price & decent quality and variety if possible) place for legit anime or jpop cd's?

for Legit stuff, I usually check dvdpricesearch.com

It'll look over the net for the best deal...I got end of eva for something like 14 dollars, and that's with tax and S & H.

For bootlegs though, I'm no help, I usually just hit up chinatown in NYC.

...The Chobits DVD they have listed is bootleg alright. You can tell by the region coding. No official DVDs are "All codes , Region Free". Most are Region 1, but some, like the FUNimation DVDs, are Regions 1/2/4.

Well. There is only one way to find out. I have already ordered the Spriggan DVD from them before I read this post. Since it only cost 12.00, I thought what the heck. I'll tell you if it's bootlegged or not when it arrives.

Some official DVDs are region-free. The older US Manga titles, for example. The following are tagged "ALL" for the region code:

Roujin Z
Cyber City Oedo 808
Dominion Tank Police
Guardian of Darkness
Gall Force - Eternal Story

Another sign that it might be a bootleg is if it has Chinese subtitles.

By english language, do you mean a dvd that has an english language track, or just an english subtitled track?

I've never seen a bootleg that has an english dub track, I really wouldn't want one either, so I can help you out in that regard. If you are looking for HK DVD's with an english subtitle track...theres a few ok stores in chinatown that are quite cheap. Keep in mind that these directions would be if you got off at the canal st. station on the 6 train, and walked toward mott st, elizabeth, lispenard, bayard, etc.

Off Canal st. on Elizabeth, there is the Elizabeth St. Center, right next to a police spot. Downstairs in the center, there is at least 3, fansub stores. They all sell bootlegged DVD's, they actually keep getting more and more everytime I stop by.

Across the street from the center, is the J&L video game store. They have a limited selection of HK's, but sometimes you get lucky. Most of the time they don't even know what the series is, so they have no idea how to price them. I was in there once and they had the love hina spring special for 45 bucks, but the actual love hina series for 25. Makes no sense, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

God, I wish I could remember what street the other store I usually hit up is on. It's off Canal as well, but on the other side of the street as the ones I just mentioned to you. This probably won't help, but the street is before most of the one's I mentioned in the begining, and is after you pass the burger king. Anywho, its about a block down, and has a blue awning, with your stereotypical anime characters on it, like pikachu, goku, etc. This place doesn't have the best selection of DVD's at last check, but has the best prices...and the coolest people who work there. Very cool guys, who are helpful and knowledgeable/speak very good english.

The DVD's themselves, are more or less a crap shoot. Some, like berserk are great, others like Cowboy Bebop are ass. You can do some research around other bbs. There was actually a pretty informative post on HK's on the more than toast bbs a little while back that you should check out. It'll tell you a bit about what companies are bad, and what companies are even beyond hella bad.

hope that helps a little bit, if you want email me, and I can give you more detailed directions or thoughts on this stuff.

Thanks Mooooo,

Your information was actually really helpful.

I won't be able to check out this stuff until I'm back in New York, 6 to 9 months from now, but I'll keep the knowledge within me.

Anyways Thanks. :D
