ANIME... not cartoon...

This forum is for the general discussion of Anime.

They both are Animation, but they are different TYPES of Animation. Well, that's how they should be known.

But yeah, saying that Cartoons are Anime is alot better than saying that Anime are Cartoons. But's it still a bit inaccurate.

n.

A drawing depicting a humorous situation, often accompanied by a caption.
A drawing representing current public figures or issues symbolically and often satirically: a political cartoon.
A preliminary sketch similar in size to the work, such as a fresco, that is to be copied from it.
An animated cartoon.
A comic strip.
A ridiculously oversimplified or stereotypical representation: criticized the actor's portrayal of Jefferson as a historically inaccurate cartoon.

Not all Japanese anime are cartoons.

:?

so....what do I call Grave of the fireflies? If "cartoon" is supposed to mean a satircal, funny, or oversimplified animated production to an American audience what should I call something serious in english? Let alone japanese animation that isn't funny...I can't call it a cartoon and I am just calling it another name for cartoon (in japanese) if I say anime?
What would I call Final Fantasy: the spirits within movie? Or the 1980's Wizard movie? Or the animated Hobbit, Lord of the rings..?

The definition of animated cartoon seems like it's just a moving version of something funny and doesn't help me decide what is a cartoon past movement. Stuff is starting to contradict itself definition wise here...so I can no longer comprehend any furthur meaning from this discussion ...I must either leave this fiasco or be caught in a lethal paradox that most likely results in sitting in a corner trying to get a clear cut definition of an almost purely social and "slang" like definition.. :shock:

Yeah!

It's like I said, the definition of Anime and Cartoon doesn't matter in considering the difference that is between them.

Let me try saying it this way:Who you are is more important what your name is.

Or for this topic:
What they are is more important than what their names are.

Actually.... I mean:

What they really are is more important than what their names are said to mean.

Yes.. that was a typo....the first one should have said:

Who you are is more important than what your name is.

dammit, its not inaccurate. anime are cartoons, cartoons are anime, period. and they are not different types of animation. do the simpsons and, say, beavis and butthead have the same style of animation? no. anime (american definition) is one style of cartoon. it all looks the same, its one style, one part of a whole.

Red and Blue are both types of Colors.... wow...and I always thought that they were two different colors.... but I guess they the same exact color after all...

It wouldn't matter if I called you "Blind" or "Jhpqw", cause what's it matter, THEY'RE ALL LETTERS.... so they all must be the same....

I guess Rap and Rock are exactly the same too.... I mean.. they are both Types of music.

I guess Sound Effects and Music must be the same too, since they're both types of Audio....

---------

Cartoon is one style of Animation. Anime is another. "Anime" is much more than just the Japanese word for Animation.

If you really wanna go by the idea of Anime just being another word for Animation, then Cartoons are a stlye of Anime, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND!

And if really think that Japanese Anime and American Cartoons look the same, then you are obviously blind and shallow.

The idea of calling one Anime and the other Cartoon is about more than just the way it looks anyways. It's about WHAT THEY ARE!!

ok...im not saying they look the same. i am saying all j-anime is drawn alike, so it can be considered one style of cartoons, not many. im not saying all cartoons are the same in style, just a-anime. since the definition of j-anime=animation=cartoon, then EVERYTHING is a cartoon, and the ones from japan are just local ones to them.

You know what's cool, reading all 6 pages each one right after another (so, in a few minutes). This way you really get the feeling on how the discussion is being fought out. Almost scary to do it that way. :shock:

Anyways, I've been gone for a day, and this whole thing hasn't really advanced. How about the old settlement, to agree to disagree?

Maybe I'll just choose to never use the word cartoon again. I'll just say animation from now on. Animated show, animated feature, anime... Actually, I don't think I'll ever be able to do that. :D

Don't worry Tsuji Mania, I got what you're saying, but the word's already way too used and well known. It's hard to go back now.

But I kinda like that whole art deal..

a = anime
b = cartoons
c = art

a + b = c

Everything comes back to art. Let's make that the comon denominator.
