I don't think they have a chance, with all of the religious references. Granted, the following article talks about Adult Swim and Toonami, but I recommend reading it to see what they have to deal with.

Here's one portion of it:

"9. One of the more annoying edits I saw were edits of religious symbols or religious references. What is the reason for removing religious references from these shows (i.e. The Big O)?

Any direct references to religion, especially juxtaposed with violence, sexuality or hypocrisy, is not allowed. Here's an example: in Tenchi Universe, there is an episode where Ryoko goes to a slot machine. In the unedited version, there were Stars of David on the machine (!). We didn't notice this, and when it aired we had several people calling to complain and even threatening to sue. Anime is often full of stereotypes surrounding race and religion that non-otaku will not understand and will take offense to. As a network, CN cannot appear to have a comment on any particular religion or be seen to "endorse" or "degrade" any one style of worship. People in America generally don't want that kind of thing in their cartoons, however you and I may feel about it."

<<<<SPOILERS>>>>

I don't want to launch off into a huge frikken rant, but I will say this. I hope they DON'T bring Eva to Cartoon Network, because the Eva dub is just awful. The VAs do a horrible job of portraying the characters. Throw in the editting DokiDoki mentioned, such as religious references (Adam, Dead Sea Scrolls, NERV's logo has the word "God" plainly in it, some of the Angels explode in a crucifix-shaped cloud, even the name "Angel" may be deemed offensive to non-Christian or Judaic belief structures, etc.) and violent/unsuitable for young viewers content (Eva 00 contorting in obvious pain, Bardiel being torn apart, Eva 01 eating Zeruel, Asuka's mother committing suicide, and Rei 1 being strangled by Ritsuko's mother, whose name I can't remember off-hand, for example), and it is just a recipe for disaster IMHO.

I don't want to even imagine people watching the TV edit of the Eva dub...

Funny how you mentioned TV edit...

When EVA was aired on TV down here, none of the editing that you are suggesting, sure it was the dub but I guess they had no choice...

When I got the first 2 DVDs I noticed that wherever there was any Japanese writing... ADV or whoever did the DVDs did some kind of overlay thing and replaced it with English. The "TV edit" had explanation subs...

So in this case... the "TV edit" is less bastardised than the DVD release.

I'm sort of conflicted on this issue. On the one hand, I really want to see the rest of Evangelion, (no I haven't seen it yet, and yes I'm ashamed), but on the other hand I know it will be badly butchered on American TV. However, judging by this and what Chaos Angel said about the dub, I'd have to vote against bringing Evangelion to the Cartoon Network.

I do not think that they should but Evangaleon on Adult Swim. The dub is absolutely horrible. And, I swear, Shinji sounds like a girl.

Anyways, they'd probably cut out all the religious stuff, even though the stuff on Adult Swim in semi-uncut. It'd just ruin most of the anime. Plus, CN has to make sure they don't offend anyone (or something like that) and Eva makes a few referrences to things that people might find offensive. (I can't think of anything at the moment. Maybe they'll consider Shinji's constant depression as bad infulence or something.)

I must say that America's oversensitivity is starting to really annoy me. Religious fanatics in particular. Sending in complaints about a star of david on a slot machine? You don't see lawyers sueing people over jokes about them. I say we write all the people who did that nasty notes about them infringing on our beliefs about anime being aired un-edited.

It all started with the idiot who decided "I spilled coffee on myself, but I don't want it to be my fault; so I'll sue the restaurant and make some money while I'm at it."* From there, countless people decided to see what they could get away with suing people for, and when you add in that some people are just unable/unwilling to accept the existence of something that is outside of their belief structure and/or life experience, the result is that TV and radio networks are afraid to offend anybody because that person would probably succeed in taking a few million dollars from them, basically because they are too thick-headed to just change the station if they do not like or agree with the program!!

*For those outside of America who may not get my reference, there was a lady a few years ago who ordered coffee from McDonalds, a fast-food restaurant chain here in America, placed the cup between her legs while she was driving, and it spilled. She sued McDonalds, successfully, for a couple million dollars on the grounds that they did not warn her that the coffee was hot!!

Don't give them ideas. Seriously though, whatever happened with that fat guy who was suing a bunch of fast food restaraunts because he "didn't know" the greasy, deep-fried food was bad for him? If he won, then I've lost all faith in the legal system of the United States.

It's still in court; the suit was only brought three weeks ago.

I wouldn't be surprised if he did win the case, since there's always going to be a lawyer somewhere willing to take it. What next, then? Surgeon General's warnings at Mcdonald's? "Eating burgers and fries can make you a fat pig, if all you do is sit on your couch and watch TV."

That ought to be tattooed backwards on the guy's forehead, so he can read it every time he looks at his loser face in the mirror.

Regarding the spilled coffee lady, I think the main issue is that she wanted McD's to help pay for her injuries, which in hindsight would've been cheaper, they told her to get bent, and she took them to court, and won. The lawsuit actually had some merit, since she had 3rd degree burns down south, due to the coffee being too hot.

If you want an asinine lawsuit, try the lardasses suing the fast food companies for their weight problems. Enough ignorance in that crowd to suck the intelligence out of whoever comes near them. One plaintiff was talking about french fries, saying "I thought they were good for you". Yo, fatass, they're DEEP FRIED starch sticks with salt. If they win, I'm leaving  . The ignorant in charge will be in full force at that time.
