And what's the difference between an OAV and an anime film? I was told it has something to do with theatre release but how the heck can I know if an anime has been released on theatres or not?

A theatrical release is bound to have better animation than an OAV/OVA. Running time is also a factor, as the feature film could run 90 minutes while the OAV/OVA could be split into 2 45-minute parts, or 3 30-minute parts.

As for the difference between OAV/OVA, I've heard it said that the Japanese consider one of the two abbreviations to be the domain of adult releases...damned if I can remember which, or where I saw it posted.

yeah some ovas/oavs are not too great it's kinda like fanfict. some is ok some is better then the origonal, some is really shitty.

ex. the kenshin oav rocks much cooler than the series.

ex. the shadow skill ova is cool but not soo much better than the origonal i'd prefer it.

ex. the gundam wing endless waltz (that is an ova i rmember) is alot shittier than the series. the oav is worth watching once but that's it, no more than that i'de recemend watching the series instead.
