Anime Ratings...

Postby Sierra Lorna » Sun Aug 18, 2002 10:33 pm

There's a few anime shows I want to watch and/or buy, and I was just wondering what the ratings would be for some of them (PG, 14A, R, etc.) since on almost all of the Internet sites I've went to just say that they're Unrated.

Akira
Rurouni Kenshin
Sin the Movie
Battle Angel
Armitage III
Berserk
Fushigi Yuugi
Ghost in the Shell
Revolutionary Girl Utena
Inu Yasha
Ranma 1/2
Serial Experiments Lain
Outlaw Star
Spriggan
Hellsing
Tekken
Macross Plus

I'd like to know, first of all because I'm only 15 and shouldn't really be watching anything above 14A, but also because my parents (the credit-card holders :) ) demand a rating. So, if you know any, please let me know.

Also, if you want to comment on any of the shows I mentioned, be my guest! :)

Thanks!

Well, Ranma is gonna have lots of "casual" nudity and what would be classified as "cartoon violence", probably. Outlaw Star doesn't have any full nudity, but Melfina does get kinda revealing. My parents thought it was OK, though. OS might also have a bit of a violence rating, but no more than most anime. OS is a good "watch-in-front-of-the-parents" series.

Well, let's see if I can help....

Akira I know is rated R, and with good cause.....

Armitage is unrated, but I would put an R rating on it. On Poly-Matrix anyway. Haven't seen Dual Matrix yet...

I haven't seen Sin in a while, but if I remember correct it was quite bloody....

Adolesence of Utena is rated 13 and up. Nothing wrong with that...

Ranma 1/2 would be a good one to get if you can look past some brief nudity. Nothing bad though..

Haven't seen enough of Fushigi Yuugi to comment on. Just the first couple episodes...

Battle Angel is another one I haven't seen in a while, but I think it was pretty graphic...

I don't recall anything in Lain that would have upset my parents. I think it was rated 16 and up though....

Haven't seen Tekken, but I heard it was horrible from quite a few people. Maybe you should stay away from that one...

That's about all I can say....

Everyone should stay away from Tekken. It sucked, it sucked a lot. It was so bad I can't even come up with enough synonyms for 'bad' to call it.

And then there was all the violence and blood, and that token sex scene in the unrated version too...

Hmmmm.

Ghost In the Shell would definitely be rated R for nudity and violence.
I don't think Rurouni Kenshin would be more than PG.
Lain has some drug use (I think) so that would probably get it a PG-13, plus that's just not a kid's series

I would say Lain is closer to an R-rating than PG-13. It has a couple of bloody scenes, and some of the concepts are pretty deep. I'd also say that Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Spriggan, Berserk, and Hellsing are definate R equivilants. Outlaw star is a pretty safe be though. It has non-graphic gun/fist fights, and lots of space battles. Pretty harmless stuff for the most part. There is mild language, occasional use of alcohol, and a few scenes with some NEAR nudity (nothing is actually shown, but it does leave much to the imagination either).

If you're looking for some more PG-13 type stuff (or 14a... whatever you called it.. :) ) I'd recommend Trigun, Esceflowne, and Blue Seed since you seem to be looking at mainly action titles. Good luck with your parents.

I've seen Trigun and Escaflowne and I loved them to death (already own both boxed sets :D ) but I haven't heard much about Blue Seed before... I'll have to look into that one.

Macross Plus - Good even if you're not a macross fan

I'll check those out too. Thanks!

Akira - R
Rurouni Kenshin - TV series, PG. OVA series, hmm, 14A min.
Sin the Movie - R, blood fest.
Fushigi Yuugi - 14A min. The series involves attempted rape more than once, but is an excellent series.
Ghost in the Shell - I think it actually is rated 14A
Revolutionary Girl Utena - TV series, PG. Movie, 14A.
Ranma 1/2 - Depends on how you react to casual nudity =P.
Spriggan - 14A. Fun but psychotic on occasion.
Tekken - Don't waste your time, it blows.
Blue Seed - PG.

My ratings may be a little looser than the norm, but I've tried to compensate it a little from being a slack Canadian rating to a stricter US rating :P

Akira - R
Ranma 1/2 - I'd say most likely 13 and older, as it's got some frontial/back nudity, and there's minor curse words in the dub (Such as damn, lecher (Lecher isn't a curse word persay...), etc, IIRC.)

I find this totally unreasonable. Outlaw Star has almost nothing objectionable! Especially if you watch the CN dub ~_~

What site did you find these ratings at?

These would be my opinions of the ones I've seen:

Akira: R (Mainly for the mutation scene, lots of gore in general)
Berserk: R for most of the series, NC-17 for episodes 25 and 26 (Christ they're sketchy)
Ghost in the Shell: R for violence and nudity
Ranma: PG-13 if you ignore the nudity
Outlaw Star: Uncut PG-13, edited its G (They killed it on cnet)
Spriggan: PG-13 for violence (Don't watch if you're offended by Anti-American themes)
Hellsing: R for violence and major adult themes.

Those are all I've seen. I'd recommend Cowboy Bebop as well.
The best effects are the ones you don't notice.
