I've heard rumours saying that Evangelion was some guys suicidal ideas drawn down. Is this true?

Thats strange...

Ya know, that DOES sound allittle Farfetched. I mean, who would waste so much time making an anime series based on suicidal ideas. Also, its too much for that.

Pretty close to that, apparently. He makes a depression inspired series,it goes BOOM! and next thing he knows it is considered one of the crown jewels of anime and has inspired something like one billion dollars in marketing.

Then the guy went on to make Ebichu,The Housekeeping Hamster, apparently no longer depressed.

Rumor has it Anno would sleep at his desk at the Gainax HQ so he couldn't go home and kill himself.... this was before he started work on Eva...

So yeah I guess so.

Evagelion I think is Annoy trying to find out why he exists.

Shinjanno:

"I exist for a reason! And that reason is to cause the Third Impact for you baby!"

Azaka,Misao,Raymin(lousy HK bootleg translations):"Yes!Let us to get it on"

*cue gong and Chinese dub of "Closer" by Nine Inch Nails*

From the unreleased HK DVD "Evangelion the way Anno wanted it but Gainax said "we're not a hentai company throw in angst instead of unf." "

Well before Evangelion, Hideaki Anno made Nadia which was also pretty popular. So I think that he may have had at least a little bit of recognition from that.

No he didn't.

He produced Ebichu and two other shows as part of a collection of shows directed by women (Anime Ai no Awawa Hour)

After Eva he made Kare Kano with many of the same psychological ideas (see my video Arima Shinjikun for more info :P)

Then, annoyed with the perstering nature of the animation industry he went on to make two feature films, Love and Pop and Celebration Day.

All of this work has similar stylistic qualities but the content isn't exactly suicidal.

Recently he has done storyboards for Mahoro and is working in part on Gainax's new show about a girl in switzerland or austria. Not sure, I think it's a take on the princess maker games but set in europe.... but I might be totally misinterpreting what I've heard.

LOL!! You'll have to talk to Jon about it; that's not my department. :D But I doubt it, especially what happened with MJ's "Service" vid

Look...

Evangelion is just a personal piece.

Alfred Hitchcock had issues with his religious upbringing and his sexual desires... he made the movie Vertigo to exorcise his demons into his art.

Anno had manny issues to deal with... issues with his own father... issues with life... issues with intercommunication and with identity.

He decicded, like many other great filmmakers, to exorcise his own inner demons into his art. He simply tried to come up with his own answers and share them in the story.

It is an incredibly brave gesture and it leaves us with an empowering message... and it's a shame it was wasted on so many stupid people... people who wrote him THOUSANDS of hate letters...

and so that horrible movie got made... which really also feels like a message... a "f- you!" to all those morons.

I'm very tired of people who say "I didn't get it... so it's stupid."
They blame their own lack of comprehension on the TV series.

Anyway... everyone has suicidal moments... everyone faces incredible depression...

What builds your character is how you get out of those slumps... how you push on. Anno gave us Evangelion... and I for one see it as a gift.

Um... let's see, is he on the uppers?

Love and Pop was about teenage prostitution (ish) and celebration day is about a girl who's going to kill herself on her birthday.

I wouldn't really call those "uppers". He's attracted to trauma and angst, although he has seemably finished with these themes for now.
