Short Answer: Yes

Longwinded Explaination: Yes, because when people say that they are "an anime fan", people tend to immediately respond with "You mean those violent pornographic cartoons?". It has happened to me on three occasions (twice in best buy while searching the anime rack and once in hastings at the manga rack), and every time I try to explain that not all anime is huge boobs and gore, they roll their eyes and walk off. That's the problem with them. The few bad eggs are totally destroying anime's credibility as an art form as well as a pool for literary advancement. Then again, some people like the huge boob anime, so I can't fault them for that, but the "mainstream" anime shouldn't crowbar it in just for the sake of appealing to the few that do like the boobage. Chrono Crusade and Satella/Rossette is my favorite example of this. Seriously, an anime revolving around Catholic themes (that isn't hentai in nature >_>) should not have nuns OR rich diamond girls with huge knockers.

But what are ya going to do about it. If the anime companies think that huge boobies sell merchandise, then they're going to sell them.

And as a matter of face, huge boobies do sell lots of merchandise, so we might as well get used to it.

If said person persists in irritating you and your interest in Japanese animated cartoons, yell RAPE as loud as you can and pray he/she gets a jail cell with somebody lovely.

Option #1 is usually mine. It actually really pisses me off. Everytime I pull out a copy of some manga (doesn't matter what) one of the guys near me says something like "Ew stop reading porn" or other BS like that.

Nod your head, say 'Yes, especially the stuff with 4 year olds' then whip out your dick and start jacking off to while reading the back of whatever anime DVD you were looking at. This won't change their opinion of you, but it's a fairly safe bet they'll at least go away and leave you alone.

I look at them like they are the dumbest person I have seen in my life and don't make a comment at all. And just stare. And stare. And stare. Until they go away or waffle. Maybe I'll look at them with a "god you're so stupid" smile and gently pat them on the back like they are in the special olympics or something.

Most people are looking for the angry or embarassed reaction anyway. Treat them like they are idiots without calling them one. You're only as dumb as people make you feel.

Sometimes I say 'no I prefer porno that's of the hentai flavor' and people start crackin' up. Ideally, you only have to say 'you don't watch any or have seen any 'good ones' have you?'

The ignorant and uneducated will drag you down. All you have to do is not let them. Do what you want, get what you want and don't push your opinions onto others.

Also, you can point out that there are good fight action or slice of life romance anime out there that's as dramatic / boring as a soap opera. [I pointed out Boys Be and shut some people up actually...]

Black Lagoon is the best way to prove to people that anime makes Hollywood movies of awesome look quite weak actually.

I'd not seen Black Lagoon (nor am I sure if I want to... lol) but I'd challenge that remark. Anime is not > Hollywood, anime only exists cuz Japan can't afford Hollywood, their pretty much one in the same just gone in a slightly different direction. There are pluses in anime that hollywood can't do (the degree of SFX and suspension of belief... though hollywood has become QUITE good at that as well) but NOTHING beats a well thought out movie IMO simply because I can usually envision myself in a hollywood movie simpler than I can envision myself in even the simplest digital world. However anime's plus is that it's ALL Japan has. Seriously they have no military capacity, they take ALL their pride out of the media. Largest difference between Japan and America thus the difference between anime and hollywood.

Even if Japan could afford Hollywood budgets they'd have a hard time finding the space. It's a small country. Hardly matters I guess, since Hollywood movies can be filmed pretty much anywhere now, not just in studios. I'll bet Japan will develop some high quality 'hollywood' type films in the future.
