Hollywood Death Note script leaked, holy crap....

I read the synopsis (couldn't download the file), but even so, I spot many things wrong with this script that I can hardly list them all.
The ones that stand out most to me:

1. Light's character. "Luke" sounds like a complete wuss. His entire character is boring. Light's ego is what drove him to use the Death Note, but, even so, in the very end he ends up burying it in concrete?! Is that a joke? This is something Light would NEVER do, and I am sickened with the end.
2. No Ryuk? Wth? |:
3. "Sophia." She's "Luke's" girlfriend in the very start. the Light I know expresses no interest in dating, yet this "Luke" is so serious about "Sophia" that he gives her his mom's ring, which, by the way...

Sooo many things are just messed up. Only thing that has me confused is:

A 2007 article in The Star (Malaysia) states that more than ten film companies in the United States expressed interest in creating a remake. Vertigo Entertainment is currently set to develop an American Death Note remake. In April 2009, it was announced that WB had acquired the rights to make a live-action version of the manga, and had hired Charley and Vlas Parlapanides to adapt the script. The new film will be based upon the original manga series rather than the existing live-action films.

So, is this the remake of the live-actions, or is this the one based on the manga?

Perhaps the thing that's bugging me the most is that they're portraying kira's decent into evil is a magical attribute of the death note itself, i.e., it's not his fault, the death note is corrupting him. It's obvious they're trying to make him the good guy and L. the villian. But honestly their quasi-moral dichotemy is what made the original.


On the bright side, it does copy several of the more interesting scenes verbatim. From the thing with Lind L. Taylor to when he kills Ray(Row) penbar.

he originally planned out to get it from the cement but as the old luke was telling the luke that didnt know about the death note the location, the luke that didnt know shattered his phone because he didnt want to know.

I only just finally saw DN (just... yesterday in fact is when I finished it) and I'm greatly saddened by this, if true (that poster looks CORNBALL AS HELL! We're talking Twilight cornball here!!) they make the thing sound like a tea party!!

I shouldn't fret though... with a good director I'm sure it wouldn't be THAT bad... maybe?

Twilight 2: Book That Kills People

Just finished reading all of the script. About half way through it, I could accept Luke's lame character, even though I much prefer Light's.

Sophia isn't really a Misa in my mind. It seems as if they got rid of Misa entirely, and just added a new character, because there is so much more to Misa than Sophia.

With no Ryuk, the story loses some of its 'flavor.' Would have been interesting if Shinigamis were included in the script more, because they definitely made an important part of the story. Though I'm also glad they didn't include Shinigamis, because I wouldn't like to see them animated.

The script seems to only cover up to the part right before Light joins L's team in the manga. I know you can only put so much into a movie script, though, before it becomes too long, or before the original plot is shortened too much.

They did a pretty good job of covering what they did though, but the characters are what bother me most.

Big complaints 1-3

1. WHY THE HELL DID THEY TAKE OUT RYUK?!?!?! Half the fricken story revolves around the interaction of the Death Gods with people (mainly Light but many others). It's like trying to make a Ghost Busters movie but leaving out all the ghosts. And Ryuk is one of the central (and definitely most entertaining) characters in the whole story.

2. Light was an arrogant egomaniac who started out with good intentions but ended up a monster, don't try and make him some sympathetic character, he was a dick, plain and simple.

3. The manga was popular and successful because of they way it was written, changing the whole damn story to fit the idea that the main character always has to be a good person ruins everything. Why can't these directors see that if you want to make a movie based on a book (in this case manga counts as a book heh) then try and just follow the damn story the way it was originally made, if you're going to change it then call the movie some other name, so when it fails it doesnt bring shame to the story it was based on.

I had only heard rumors about this but I'm honestly wishing they had not decided to make it at all. My expectations for this movie are about as high as they were for the dragonball one.

Ok, after my initial rant, someone nicely reposted the link to the script and i'm going through it. Aside from butchering Light's character the story isnt as badly changed as I thought. Basically the 2 major changes (aside from Ryuk being gone, which still blows) are 1. that Light is doing all of this out of revenge for his mother dying, so his whole motivation is in trying to track down her killer. 2. He ends up becoming a good person again at the end and burying the Death Note.

However, several of the scenes in the movie are right out of the manga with the cloak and dagger back and forth between Light and L and those seem to be intact, so the movie could still work. I'll just try and enjoy the meat of the story and pretend the altered ending doesnt exist.
