Trouble with video streams in Vegas 5

Postby Delta Four » Sun Feb 25, 2007 11:56 pm

I bought Vegas 5 a while ago and for a while it could import almost all my avi files. Then for no apparent reason it stopped importing these files. Everytime I try to import an avi file I get the message "Stream attributes could not be determined". How can I fix this? Please help!

are your avi files encoded with divx or xvid?
if you can't tell, get gspot (click the pic in my sig)

if so, these are bad for editing (which more often than not means that the person is using downloaded footage) and you should re-encode the footage that you want to use with a lossless codec.

lossless files are big (not as big as uncompressed...but still big) which is why I reccomend taking small clips of your footage and re-encoding those as opposed to entire episodes.
you can do it with virtualdubmod, if you play around with it for a little bit you should get the hang of it...but if you need help look at this, and this

Naw, If you want smaller files, get VirtualDubMod(google it) make sure it's virtualDub"MOD" because theres a program called VirtualDub and it's not as good. Anyways, select the episodes/movies/whatever in the program, export it as a DivX file! I recommend Div-X Slow-Motion codec. If you need help on that, I guess I can post pics.

Do not do this to clips you're going to edit with. Listen to Kariudo.

pretty much the only major difference between the two is that vdubmod can import a wider range of files. (vdubmod doesn't automatically produce smaller files)
if you read what I said carefully, I did suggest virtualdubmod.

did you not read my post at all?
DIVX AND XVID ARE BAD FOR EDITING, a hacked version of the divx codec would turn out even worse.
don't believe me?

Alright, this seems to make sense. What I did copy from my DVDs was encoded in mpeg4 instead of huffyuv. I had tried installing huffyuv on my comp a couple of times a while back and it didn't take.

Is Virtualdub the only way to avoid encoding in divx or xvid? Anyways I'll try what you guys said. Thanks for the advice!

You use VDubMod to convert files to HuffYUV. Download the AMVapp and read this.
