divx/xvid encoded footage (commonly used for fansubs) is not meant for editing

if you search through the forums you will find an abundance of people asking the same thing, the solution (besides using dvd footage) is to re-encode your footage (preferably with a lossless codec like Lagarith)

BEWARE! lossless means relatively large files, you should take small clips and re-encode those (as opposed to entire episodes)

refer to Read ErMaC & AbsoluteDestiny's Friendly AMV Guides (linked in my previous post) for further questions

Yeah i just noticed that as i was looking through the whole topic, thanks anyways but i ran into another problem... i cant see how to save it into a wmv file or some kind of file or seomthing  plz help

I'm unfamiliar with Vegas Video.
Will it work with the DVDs that are protected? Like my Yu-Gi-Oh and Inuyasha DVDs? I want to get back to making my AMVs, but I can't do anything with my DVDs.
If Vegas can't get passed that protection, is there a program that can??

Thanks.

You need a program like DVD Decryptor to rip the files from the DVD to your hard drive, and then you'll probably need VirtualDubMod to convert the .VOBs to editable .avi files. You CAN edit with the .VOB files, but it'll be much slower on your system.

Download the AMVapp to get all the necessary programs.

Then Read ErMaC & AbsoluteDestiny's Friendly AMV Guides to learn how to rip and clean your files.

Hope that helped!

Um, I'm trying to convert my divx codec videos into avi and stuff with virtual dub so that I can edit them on Vegas, but vegas isn't letting my upload them, says it doesn't support the format. Help? T_T

Actually, in your media pool tab, in the top right hand corner it lists the video's codec. It'll say " video codec: divx/audio codec: mp4 " etc. I know in Vegas 4 it says that. Usually, though, you can find out a codec by the way the program responds to the footage. Almost instantanously Vegas will fag out the footage by making blocky if its divx/xvid. You can also find out the codec if you play it in like winamp and load the properties.

Thanks, I was wondering why one of my AMVs had blocky parts in it. Is there a quick and easy way to change a file from divx to something that works in Vegas?

What I usually do is open the divx file in VirtualDub and re-encode it into something different :)

Question about that, what kinda codec should it be re-encoded into? Cause I first tried saving the file as avi, and selecting the video mode as 'Full Processing Mode'. It was able to read in Vegas, only the file was huge, 780 megabytes for a 30 second clip! (The original was around 10 megs).

So yeah, which file codec should I use in VirtualDubMod that uses the least filesize possible AND retains as much quality too?

using full processing mode (as opposed to direct stream copy or another mode) does not affect filesize

to make sure that your clip(s) will work, you should use a lossless codec like lagarith or huffyuv. (lagarith makes smaller files)

it sounds like you're saving as an avi file with no compression (uncompressed rgb) which turns out very, very large files. selecting lagarith as your compressor should solve this problem

The videos are still being outputted larger than I need them to be. At this rate, I'm thinking I did something wrong, so I'm gonna check the tutorials on the site.

Thanks =)

The videos are going to be gigs big. If you're getting a few gigs per clip. that's normal. Try the Indeo codec. It doesn't look that bad, and it'll edit fine.

*sigh*
This may sound funny but it is true... I can use pan/crop tool without any problems but when I try to use "velocity" I can't see "the green line" on my clip. I have chose Insert/Remove Envelope -> Velocity but still I can't see it... Urgh. Where on Earth it is? -.-'

I don't know why you can't see it, but alternatively you can right-click on the clip, go to "Properties" and at the bottom there's a box that says "Playback Rate." Adjusting the numbers there will do the same thing as adjusting the velocity.
