I also never encode audio though, because I know I'm just going to be editing with the source, and not using the audio, and that also makes the file smaller.

Thanks for all of the replies! But AVI does not work on my Sony Vegas, it only comes out as audio.
And I honestly don't even know what codecs are, can any of you explain it to me?

codecs is like the family root of a particular file type. Your Avi doesnt work because it is probably not in lossless form. You can make it lossless by running it through avisynth and virtualdub. There should be a guide somewhere in the org but I cant seem to find it now.

This might be getting away from the actual *vegas* topic..but can u actually choose in xillisoft that the conversion codec for avi to be lagarith...because if i find the video codec option...and click on it ..for hd avi format all i get as an option is mpeg-4? no avi option in xillisoft has a way of putting lagarith as the codec..and yes i do have it installed and can work in it just fine....i use xillisoft 7....and not some cracked lacking in options version ..yet actually bought one..so idoubt anything missing from it...so my main worry is...can i get smth better to convert to than what i use now?usually mkv sources--->avi (xillisoft mpeg-4 codec)?if i can get from mkv to a better usable in Vegas format....not mentioning the mkv toolnix use..to decode mkvs..wich usually gives a h264 format video file wich i failed till now how to use it...can any advice on how to obtain that...its that i think the quality of the converted files is bad..its quite good...im just wondering if the way i do it is a good way

Xilisoft is pretty bad, it cant choose your own codec like those lossless ones.
