From the Mac to the Org?

Post by KagatoAMV » Fri Dec 21, 2007 2:08 pm

Can anyone suggest a guide for exporting an AMV from the Mac (created in FCP) for distribution here on the .org?

Thanks

But you'll probably stop at the ishtori site and not need the rest. I included the imovie guide only because that's how I started before I switched to FCP.

One suggestion, though: if doing an x264 encode, I'd recommend getting a recent build, not the one from BerliOS - x264 has advanced a lot over the past year, and that build is awfully outdated simply by virtue of time. Unfortunately, short of compiling it yourself, I'm not aware of any newer builds for Mac - although I'm sure something is available.

Unfortunately there are only two ways to do decent encoding on OS X right now.
1. Use MacPorts to install the FFMPEG, MEncoder, x264 Terminal apps and learn the explosively complicated command syntax for them.
2. VMWare :|

Honestly, I'd just use QuickTime conversion to MPEG-4 using Apple's H.264 codec. It's not as good as x264, but the accessibility offsets the quality cost unless you're super hardcore.

I would be willing to share my builds if anyone needs 'em.

I've never had an issue with my method using D-Volution.

If that's the same as this:

Then it's not been updated since February 2006. Which makes it even more outdated than the latest BerliOS build (which, going by the x264 SVN changelog, is probably around 100 revisions old). Moreover, I'm not sure if that uses x264 (which would make it nearly 300 revisions old) or ffmpeg as a whole. Either are severely deprecated if the versions used are over a year old - I'd actually not recommend using builds more than about 3 or 4 months old.

That would definitely be useful, for those that need it. I've thought about doing encodes on my parents' iMac, but the reality of the MacPorts method was just too daunting, and I suck at compiling software.

Yeah, the ishtori site is great, but the exporting section is pretty light.

My past exports have been pretty poor (mpg1 & divx for the most part), so I'd really like to get a better method.

Anyone have any advice on the settings for MPEG-4 H.264, best for release here? I can export a high quality h.264 quicktime movie, but thats in a quicktime container.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I've never run into a problem. No one has ever complained. Why should I be worried?
