MP4 won;t open in Final Cut Pro

Why won't mp4 files open up in my program it says Unknown File. idk why they are just mp4 it opens up in VLC and quicktime.

1) What is the Codec
2) Did you try placing it in a .MOV container?

I didnt see the mac forum. sorry. I just seen the encoding topic thought it would be alright. I didnt see a mac forum.

How do i check the codec?

MediaInfo, google it or search on sourceforge. MP4 is not a format, it's a file extension that describes a bunch of loosely similar containers, each with different codec support. It's actually quite hard to arbitrarily support ALL MP4 files.

hmmm idk. i shall have to look into that. lol. My teacher said to convert it with quicktime pro.

The files open in Sony vegas Pro 9 on my pc but no Final Cut on my mac.

Dual boot your machine with OSX and Windows yes, and if you wanna be really badass, a slimline speed/performance tuned linux or BSD install for running x264 (which you compiled yourself obviously.)
