Beta exch.- 1 romance and 1 action for viewing

Postby WesW » Wed Jul 02, 2008 7:28 pm

No editing experience necessary; all I really need is a general opinion for what works or doesn't in a given vid, though of course the more detailed the critique the better.
The vids are in mp4 format, so be sure you can play those.

The action vid uses Wolf's Rain, and is set to Guns~'n~Roses's Welcome to the Jungle. I think it may be the best vid I've made so far.
Here's the link: Darcia's Descent

The romance vid is a remake of Every Time, and I feel that it's the best pure romance vid that I've made so far. The song would fall into the category of "oldie but goodie", I guess, and the anime is Ai Yori Aoshi.
Here's the link: Every Time

I'd be happy to view a beta or give an opinion in return.

I will watch your videos and comment if you so mine. They are two versions of an amv, and I would like an opinion on which is better for a con. I'll give an opinion on your amvs right now.

Mine are both FFVII amvs using Malice Mizer's "Le Ciel" and some FFVII:AC dialogue.

Downloading the vids right now, and I'll comment on them ASAP. Do you want me to comment here, or would you prefer a pm?

Also, would you mind taking a look at my beta?

Either way would be fine. If you can access the Darcia vid, you're doing better than I can right now. I don't know if the problem is with the host or my parents' isp.
I'll try and look at everyone's vids either tonight or tomorrow.

Yeah, I was able to get the Darcia video just fine.

Every Time
I watched this AMV all the way through a couple of times and the first thing that I really noticed was that it was kind of hard to watch after the first couple of minutes. The emotion was definitely there and the flow is decent, but it seemed to be a lot of the same sort of thing happening throughout the video and didn't hold my interest because of it. I think it'd be more interesting if you added more of the story into it (I've never seen this anime so I don't know for sure if there really was any added) and maybe some more flashbacks to when they were younger/how they met (if there are any) and stuff like that there.

Hope this helps. I should have comments for your Darcia video by sometime tomorrow.

It appears that the problem with linking to Darcia's Descent has to do with the apostrophe in the name (code must've been designed by a Frenchman ;) ), therefore I've uploaded another version with the name Descent of Darcia. This version is more polished than the earlier one, and I've made some significant changes to the last minute or so of the vid, so if you liked the earlier version you'll want to get this one, too.
Here's the link: Darcia's Descent (I would recommend rt.-clicking and saving to the desktop.)

I'm sorry, but I couldn't even figure out where to click to download the files. The only things on the page were ads.

Did you mean to only post the first 30 seconds? Those guidelines in the rules thread were written several years ago, so I'm sure you can post the entire vid now.
I have to tell you now, though, that the song you used has been so over-used that many people are going to blast you for it. In fact, I think that anything by Linkin Park is going to get blasted. LP is closely associated with the legions of Narutard vids that have come out over the last few years, and from what I gather many people here never want to see another LP vid. Sorry.
Myself, I'd make a thread in the general forum asking people how they feel about LP before posting your vid. I may be wrong, but this may be a case where you're better off just distributing the vid privately to your friends.

It's too bad that you didn't try and get some input on your vid before posting it.
Your vid looked quite good for a beta, but not nearly polished enough for a final release. You did an excellent job of picking out scenes to match the lyrics, but some of the timing was off, and overall the editing was uneven.
Myself, I'd add quick fades during sequences such as when he raps about the crack houses and apartments, in order to give the vid the same sort of smooth transition as the song. Also, since you had a short lip-sync at the start of the vid, I'd try and eliminate the lip flaps from subsequent scenes, since your first reaction is to wonder if it's another lip-sync. In fact, you may want to remove the lip-sync, since the singer wasn't quoting anything, but simply speaking in first person, as he was during the entire song. Finally, the credits sequence at the end didn't go with the rest of the vid.
If you really like this vid, I'd keep working on it in order to get it really nice and polished, and then re-release it sometime down the road. You've got a nice idea here, but you released the vid way too soon.

Was there any particualr time when you found yourself getting bored? I thought that the story moved along pretty well up through the time when he gave her the shoes.

At the top of the page are three letters. You type those three into the box next to them (it's to insure your not a robot or a hacking program, stuff like that) and it takes you to the download page.

I've made another based on some advice, here it is; look at this one instead.

Yeah it was around that point that I started losing interest. Again, I don't know the anime at all so that might be why I didn't really see much of a story.

That's all I have finished so far, and I initially posted it because I wanted a few opinions about the rotoscoping I did (since I've never attempted it before) and some other stuff. I have a WIP thread somewhere on here but so far no one's responded.

Bah, the more people I irritate the better :)

But, in all seriousness, the only reason I chose to use 'In the End' is because I can easily picture exactly what I want to happen, I have a clear concept in mind, and I feel like it's too good of an idea to not use just because majority of the people on this website hate the song/automatically associate it with something bad. And if people are going to end up bashing my AMV just because they don't like the song...well...it won't bother me any.

Hmm...maybe the song is the reason no one's responded to my WIP thread? 0_o

I don't know how much advice I can give on this one, since the song is in Japanese.
The title page went too fast to read anything, especially since you had the text scattered around the screen. It looks pretty, but you're going to have to leave it up for a while if you want people to read it all. You may want to remove some of the info that's not really needed and rearrange the text into a more symmetrical pattern so that people can read it quicker.
As far as basic editing, you seemed to do a good job in matching the mood of the music with the speed of the scenes and the transitions. I think there were some times during the fast portion of the song when you missed some beats. What you may want to do is just hit every other beat, so that people can better see what's going on, especially since the rest of the song is much slower. Imo, as long as you have a consistent rhythm, that's what matters.
I think the vid's major problem, however, comes from the wildly different quality of the various clips. The HQ portions look good, but the umm, I guess they were flashbacks, to the older gameshots were pretty weird, and the in-game footage with the text boxes just looked bad. (The one where she asked his name went by too fast to read, too.) Even if you're lyric-synching here, you don't want the footage to turn people off, so I'd try and find anything I could to replace the in-game sections. If you look at the game vids done by the major editors, I don't think you'll ever see in-game footage used, and that's for a reason.
Hope this helps.
