May I critique?

I don't know anything about the technical side of amv's. I don't have any equipment or software, so of course, I don't make them. However, I watch them voraciously and consider myself a pretty good judge. The first I ever saw was the Pokemon/Mindless Self Indulgence amv downloaded from Kazaa... since then (only a couple months ago) I've viewed as many as I could find, commented on them to whichever friends of mine would listen, and seen Mindless Self Indulgence live once (I'd never heard of them until the video). I'm an addict, as you can guess. And the best I've ever seen is the Sailor Mars/ Desert Rose amv on Kazaa. I don't paticularly care for either the song or the cartoon, but it was still the best I've seen. I'd like to view yours and discuss them with people who actually care what I think about them, and who cares more than the artist? I'll only comment on the videos I'm asked to comment on just in case someone is sensitive about a nobody critisizing them. Meanwhile, I hope people want me to view and find my opinions helpful! I LOVE AMV'S!!!!!!!

Links and Downloads and stuff...

Postby Gizzi » Mon May 05, 2003 12:10 pm

I was going to mention that in this post, Metro ^_^ I'm a new member, guys, so if the only way I can download your videos is from this site, it's gonna be a 2 week wait on a review... as for Lonely Driver (Dave), I would like to edit one of the reviews I left... I reviewed Ode to Gourry and said something about the lip synch... well apparently I lag alot when I use real player =( I'll have to download a different version of that and the bicycle amvs I think the akira video is password protected though. I will not comment on any amv's i think my computer is affecting, cause it just wouldnt be fair.

Meanwhile, I just watched Redemption by Illia Sadri... I didnt see a listing for it here anywhere so I cant review it with this system... Remember now... I'm not a pro and I cant even make an amv at all, myself... but.... I caught myself zoning out every time I watched that amv... First problem... the video is average to poor quality... you need a better capture? what would someone who knows what they're talking about say? well, at any rate, I cant watch it in full screen mode because it's just a bunch of pixles then... Secondly, I am not familiar with the anime and could not follow any story in your amv. (I've got to point out here that I've also never seen an eppisode of Cowboy Bebop or any of these other anime's I've never even heard of before, but a good artist tells a story with his amv, and one of my favorites (thank you Dave) is a Cowboy Bebop amv.) But on the good side, the animation in the anime you chose was absolutely beautiful and it was kind of scarey looking and it looks like a pretty interesting anime! I noticed the synch a couple of times being well done (when i was noticing it at all, good job?) I don't really understand your video, sorry =( All in all I'd call it average.

METRO! You're next, buddy!

Guys, plz remember not to get offended if I dont like your stuff! I'm a nobody who knows nothing and I admit it!

I have my own server where they are too and take a note that HQ AMV's chew up old CPU's. :) Too slow, don't play properly, don't revied. It's a matter of MHZ if they don't work.
Eyecandy is not mindcandy. Real soul is hidden in the lyrics.

You cannot watch any mpeg file at fullscreen resolution without that happening. Unfortunately there are limited options regarding encodes. Mpeg2 files are large and impratical for general use but offer the best quality. Avi files are horridly large unless you use a codec to encode them but with this particular animation.... it made it look simply rancid the codecs work in most cases but this one had too many dark colors. So thus eliminating my preferred format which would have had a larger resolution. Windows media.... if you are on a Unix system or a mac you may not be able to watch it and their options are rather weak. Real Media is a dreadful format and there is a reason why it isn't used

Just a general rule for amv watching is don't really push your luck enlarging something that is of the smaller screen size. At regular resolution it is looks fine but naturaly tripling the size will not give you a good picture.

Now as far as having not seen the anime, well yeah it is a little more difficult to really get into a series that you have never heard of. The video does need you to at least have some basic information of Gatekeepers and Gatekeepers 21 in order to get the certain points. It is hardly a popular series like Bebop where even if you haven't seen it you know the characters a bit and most who have any knowledge of anime knows some background or can easily find it. Otherwise, as you mentioned, if you have no interest in teh series it is merely eye candy as it is only a 6 ep OVA so the story itself is rather condensed. Completely understandable regarding it is more eye candy than anything.

But at least as far as eye candy value, it got the reaction i was hoping for people not familiar with Gatekeepers 21..... it made you go wow and get a little interest. As I said, if you ever get to see the series the video becomes a tad more cohesive as some of the things that went to the lyrics would actually make sense. But that is fine, since I was going for the dual effect based on if a viewer had or had not seen the series.

But if you look at it in its normal size that will definitely resolve your problems with 90% of the pixelation. Even on double size it doesn't look horrible but yeah, mpegs don't work at full screen, especially 1024 resolution screens.
