For a complex, moving character, doing it as the video shows with Vegas can be VERY time consuming. I used it a LOT in several of my videos (like Avatar Duet) and I would spend 8 hours to get perhaps 5 seconds of usable, finished footage.
Adobe After Effects has much more powerful masking tools. I have tried them, but they (like most things these days) are above my ability to learn it seems.
In my "Legend of the Avatar" I used Vegas to mask then animate a JPG image of a spider - making it's legs move as it walked. I'm very happy with the results for the spider.
(he crawls in at about 42 seconds if you'd like to check it out.)
