Please. How many thousands of members do we have participating in the VCAs every year who don't use the forum, don't use the AOLIM Buddy Chat, don't use the IRC room, and have never met IRL any of the creators of the videos they vote for?

It's not nearly as much as you think. Consider this, last year I made it all the way to the final vote in Most Helpful. The only way that could have happened is if the people voting are largely from the forums, IRC, or the journals. On a similar note, Vlad mentioned someone cheating. Obviously I don't know the details but I'm willing to bet it was a fairly small number of dupes and that small number affected voting enough to actually be noticeable. The final vote I can believe has lots of people who aren't vocal members of the community voting but circumstantial evidence shows the early stages are circlejerking among those of us who know each other.

Not that I'm complaining, earlier today I voted for Developers for every category it is in, but just pointing out the active communities of the org have a large role in the early stages of the VCAs.

Someone takes this shit way too seriously. Treat this as the joke it is, the same as any other popularity contest.

there's no way I would be too serious 'bout this crap.
If I were there'd be a lot more stuff to say and a lot more porn pictures to emphasize the message ~_~

I think it's good that we don't limit categories per video just like the real awards shows. By limiting the nominations of which vids can be in which categories then the awards would skew and give alot of vids awards they don't really deserve.

For example:

Let's say that the frontrunner for Best Action also had the best effects of any vid that year. If limited by one-per-category nominations then it would be taken out of either action or effects, therefore giving the award to the second best vid in that category. And lets say the second best action vid is also up for best instrumental, therefore knocking another deserving vid out of a category it should have won.

So if we did limit the nominations there would be a bigger diversity of vids, but alot of them undeserving or being cut from categories they rightfully deserve to win.

I was thinking more in terms of a video running for best action can't run for best romance. I've seen cons that make creators choose where to submit their videos - Action/Romance/Comedy/Horror - just to add some control to the audience vote. A little control would keep those effect vids from making it into "Best no effects", too.

If we really wanted to limit duplicates, we wouldn't have Comedy+Parody and Romance/Drama+Sentimental. 2006 was the first year where Best Effects didn't automatically mean Video of the Year. There's still plenty of room for duplicate wins.

We're already getting that though - because some people didn't check their boxes the runners up are the only ones even in the semis.

I agree for the most part. When I make a vid I'll check what I intended it to be, not every category that it might in some way fit into. But then you have some videos that are very ambiguous in genre. Take for example, "Galaxy Bounce". It really isn't 100% dance or drama but it halfway fits into both. So it's a tough call either way. But this is how it is with mass popular judging on a site that has thousands of competitors. >.>

I hear ya there. Any vid that wins Best Effects this year is doing so because of the fact BTB isn't there. Same with "Hold Me Now" not being there to grab away some awards. But what can ya do?

I feel compelled to point out that 2001 (2002) and 2004 (2005) saw Drama, Romance, and Sentimental split among three different videos (and they have never all gone to the same video), and that Comedy and Parody have only gone to the same video two years out of five.

I was using the / as an "or" sign, but on second look I should have remembered the "Fun" category while I was at it.

2002 - Comedy + Parody
2003 - Sentimental + Romance
2004 - Sentimental + Drama, Comedy + Fun
2005 - Parody + Fun
2006 - Sentimental + Drama, Parody + Fun + Comedy

There's an exception each year, like 2006 had lots of duplicates but it was the first year Effects didn't match up with Vid of the Year. I still say there's plenty of room for worthy vids to get multiple wins without cross-genre vids (action/romance/drama/horror). That's my opinon and I'm sticking to it. :P

I was surprised to see that Godix wasn't in the list for most helpful this year. (sailorearth's Dee Dee Dee Project didn't make it either =/)
Sadly, I must confess that most of my nominations were of people in the IRC Room, but I've watched them all. Cried laughing at them. Then looked at most of the others, and have thought they were not as great but still good. So, by both coincidence and choice, the majority of my votes were of those in the iRC room. Does that make me a bad person?

I entered garbage info for DTSEM's song which got me disqualified.

No it doesn't make you a bad person. It does make you quite welcome in #AMV though. We always need ego boosters around.

How am I doing?

I don't know yet. Ask again about an hour after we start.
