Anyone editing on Windows 7?

Postby Garylisk » Mon Jul 13, 2009 3:20 am

Just wondering if anyone has done any video editing or the like using Windows 7, and how well it worked. I am running the RC and am installing CCCP and it made me wonder about that. CCCP didn't have an official version that was compatible with Windows 7. Should be fun trying out.

I don't trust microsoft anymore ... unless 7 gets the thumbs up by virtually everyone that trys it, I'm not getting it.

My brother will be soon (he's re-watching his source now). I have windows 7 running at work and plan on installing it at home when I can build a new system.

Once my brother starts preping and editing (he'll be asking me for help...) i'll chime in.

Define 'editing'. I have windows 7. I have all the programs to edit installed (premiere, AE, Photoshop (all CS4) and AMVamp to be specific). None gave me problems installing. I did a quick dump a clip on the timeline, export, and convert to mp4 just to make sure it works and it did. Seemed to work rather well, but then again this is a new computer much faster than what I'm used to editing on. However I haven't done any real editing on it yet, perhaps when I finish Fallout 3.

I am until my new computer is ordered. >.>

I'm using Windows 7 with Adobe Premier CS3 as well as all the AMVAPP stuff and nothing's giving me any trouble. In fact, it's been a tad easier than Vista.

I like Windows 7 a lot better than Vista so far. I still haven't tried editing yet, but the replies here are encouraging.

And yes, godix, I'd say that is editing. Just a little.

Surprisingly I agree. I kinda wish they left the fucking task bar alone but overall it's astoundingly stable and responsive. Especially surprising considering you usually have to wait till the second service pack to get anything from MS that works.

Anyway, my real point of posting is that I've since done what might be called real editing, or as close to real editing as I ever get. It works. Hell, it works better than my old PC although going from an AMD 2500+ to a I7-920 probably has more to do with that than the OS.

General question: I keep hearing that win7 is so much better/faster than Vista is. Now I actually just started using Vista for my HTPC, so i don't have much to compare to, but are the comparisons being made to how Vista was IN THE PAST or how it CURRENTLY IS?

I ask because my main system just shit itself and I just got Vista on there... I also have acquired the win7 RTM. If it's that much better i'd rather flatten and format again.

Considering i haven't used vista for more then an hour or so in any one sitting, i don't know how much I can compare either. but i can say, the last few months of using windows 7 have been a lot better then the short amount of time I've used vista. it's stable, fast and far less annoying. I've been using the 64bit version and it's stable as can be. haven't had a single issue.

UAC can be turned off - that doesn't bother me so much as actual improvements to internal things like load times and the like.

I could never find where to turn off UAC in vista...

I'm running 7 on my netbook, and it's quite fast, even without a lot of tweaking. I was previously running a heavily stripped down XP, and 7 is *almost* as fast and snappy as that was. Keep in mind this is a system with a processor roughly equivalent to what i was running in my desktop 10 years ago, with 1gb ram.

I should probably specify relevant system specs then - Core 2 Duo 6400 (2.13GHz) with 5GB (soon to be 8GB) of RAM (DDR2 800). [also an NVIDIA graphics card that was the last model before they started using CUDA stuff - I hate this]

I guess what i'm getting at is "are the differences only visible in a system that barely meets the minimum requirements, or are there advantages for me too?"

Changing your OS isn't going to magically make everything faster.
Windows 7 is a better all-around OS though, and so I would use it for that reason.
