I haven't felt creative in a solid year

Postby Beowulf » Mon Jan 14, 2008 1:18 am

Is this what happens when you hit early 20s? WTF, I'm a fucking artist, and nothing is coming out right, nothing sounds good, nothing sticks.

What do you do when this happens?

Art block is a myth. You're just being lazy.

I can relate. When I can't write, I listen to mah iPod, and listen to my "artistic" playlist. That seems to fix everything.

I either go kill some people in a various number of games... or I watch some movie I really like, listen to the credits music, then I'm usually ready to work. At least when I'm trying to write...

I've found just listening to the track I'm using over and over again helps to get me in the mood to edit.

I feel sorta the same way. I can't come up with good ideas, and I can't properly execute the ones that I do come up with. It seems like my best editing days are behind me.
Then every little while, I go do an iron chef, and I actually turn out something pretty respectable. Then I go back to not being able to do anything.

Film yourself.

You'll either make money, or lose money. Although I don't know seeing all those photo's on the Self-photo's thread.

i think its very common for early 20s i know i went through a phase like that.... pretty much you can do what you normally do and/or wait it out or find another creative outlet.

When you're close to 40 like me, you appreciate any little independent and creative thought you can muster.

Don't force it. I've done that in years past (i.e. felt I *had to* edit since folks expected me to release things) and it's bad. You make bad stuff and you don't have fun doing it (which is the key).

I'd say listen to a lot of music, watch a lot of stuff (not necessarily anime) and just chill. Ideas eventually come, I can promise you that.

(Wow this seems almost like a pep talk -_-)

What else would it be?

1. Realize that being an artist is not special, and that anyone can be an "artist."
2. Realize that you suck, and that, therefore, your work also sucks.
3. Realize that if you truly enjoy and love what you're doing, you can stick with it regardless, and improve.
