God

Postby SilversLightning » Wed Apr 25, 2007 11:42 am

Do you believe there is a god? Do you believe in God? Are you 'religious' in anyway? What type of religion do you follow? Does that religion have a concept of God? What is your concept of God?

I believe there is a god but I believe the ultimate God has a sadistic sense of humor and likes to torture people sometimes. Othertimes God can be a pretty nice guy.??.when he wants to be :P

Anywho, yeah I believe in GOD, but weirdly I believe that there are many other 'gods' now that I've gotten into studying stuff like Hinduism and Egyptology. I just think it's easier to remember one though so I only concentrate on God, but I'm not completely turned off the idea that there might be others.

I was baptized Roman Catholic, but don't practice it at all anymore :/ People think I'm Jewish. Sometimes I humor them and say I am XD. I'm now just some sort of Christian since I think Jesus is still the awesome sauce but I don't like the idea of a church because they screw things up too easily and don't stick to their guns.

My concept of God is weird. I image God being someone like House in personality or just really sarcastic. But my concept of God is more like I don't see God as He or She but more or less just GOD.

What's your take?

I consider myself a spiritually-involved but utterly anti-religious.

I used to consider myself a deiist, but that's not really accurate either. Deiism still implies a sentient god of some sort, which I personally don't believe in. My concept of god is best described by the Gurdjieffian term of 'Trogoautoegocrat - the process by which everything in the universe is the way it is'? So, a process that underlies everything, and by virtue of being a process - it doesn't love or hate anyone, it doesn't speak and it doesn't listen when you talk to it. (Yes, god is an 'it' in my view and it is also never capitalized)?

Otherwise I'm furiously against religious dogma, of all sorts. I've got a lot of respect for religious teachings, selectively so - especially Buddhist and Christian. In fact I consider myself very much a true Christian in the way of my living philosophy, except that my idea of a true Christian is very different from what pretty much any church (except possibly the Quakers) would tell you. My idea of Christianity has a lot more common with basic Buddhism than religious Christianity as such.

Philosophically, I'm certainly closest to Nietzsche - and no, that's not the Nietzsche that others describe but Nietzsche in his own words and without the 'baggage' of faulty interpretations that have been stuck on the poor guy.

Oh, to answer the question, I'm agnostic. There may or may not be a god, I don't know. I am pretty fucking sure that if there is a god none of the religions have it right though.

I used to escape the whole 'religious debate' by saying I'm agnostic, but I'm really not, either. I like the pragmatic nature of agnosticism, but by now I've got my mind more or less made up.

Agnostics, admittably, are the easiest people to deal with on the religious front, for someone like me. Atheists are easy for me to side with in anti-religious debates, but ironically when the dust settles I've actually got plenty of disagreements with pure atheists, too.

My religious upbringing can best be summarized as "vaguely secular Reform Jew"? This lasted until about fourteen or fifteen, when I began to give it serious thought. I found myself repulsed by the blind faith, mysticism, fatalism, and general bullshit I saw all around. When I found that I often knew more of Christian theology than most Christians I talked to.?? well, let's just say that such didn't speak too highly of such organized religions. The introduction of formal logic into my life only sped this process along.

The net result is that I've wound up a nontheist (negative atheist, soft atheist, whatever you want to call it)? I do not believe in a god. This is not the affirmative belief in the lack of a god, but rather that I lack the god-belief.

I'm with Oto on this one. I believe there's something out there. I believe in the principles. I'm just not into organized religion. I feel when you get that many people around a belief, egos will start flaring and then you start to lose sight of why excatly you're there. Which is what has kinda happened. And the over-zealous religious types that try to shove their religion down you throat convinced that their way is the right way. Well, how do you know? Of course, being schizo with apocolyptical voices giving you odd ideas and alternate versions of creation don't really help either. lol. But anyhow. I feel that whatever you believe in, if it gets you through and doesn't hurt anyone, is correct. Because it does the job that religion is supposed to.

I love religions. To me they're the ultimate conspiracy theories. I like to study them and I have no problem slipping into a random church and 'talking it' as if I believe it myself.

Honestly I think the bible is fiction. I think it was written by people who believed what they were saying, edited by people who wanted others to believe the parts they were leaving in, and sold by people who wanted sheep to do their bidding. I believe most 'gods' were like the sun and stars - explanations made up for things humans didn't have the science to understand because they wanted to believe their lives were meaningful and that they had a purpose beyond reproduction and death.

I believe there is something beyond random chance to blame for the universe. If it's a single entity, it'll be a god. I like to pretend I believe the old testament because I like the idea of a vengeful god who changes the rules depending on his mood and which human he's manipulating at the moment. I believe the thing (entity/god/process/etc) that guided life on earth was bored and that it has long since stopped paying attention to this particular experiment. I don't believe in an afterlife. If there is one, I hope it's reincarnation because I never want to spend an eternity in a 'perfect' realm whether it's perfectly wonderful (heaven) or perfectly horrible (hell)?

That said.?.I'm a methodist. My mom teaches a sunday school class at our church. I try to attend as little as possible because it's really boring and I always fall asleep. I have more fun talking to Catholics and Jehova's Witnesses - because they like to argue and convert and that makes for great debates.

I'm not an athiest because if there is a god and I ever see proof, I'll believe. I'm withholding judgement. I doubt it will affect my life whether there is one or not. I'll still live and die just like every other living thing on this planet. Any god with the power to make a universe should have better things to do than mess around with one cranky human. ^_^;

I like pretending I'm evil in front of Jehovah Witnesses  and I love scaring them (or scarring them for life) If there is a hell I'm so going there
