Try changing your strings. If you're going to play regularly, it's worth it anyways to get a string set that you're going to be comfortable with. Also, try hitting it normally and looking closely at the way the string is vibrating. If it's bouncing off the fretboard, you've got problems with your setup and either need to adjust your bridge or get a guitar that doesn't have a warped neck.
Where and how did you get this instrument, what's the make, and how much did you fork for it? I dropped $150 on my first axe (BC Rich Bronze series, Indonesian build) and while it keeps going out of tune, I haven't had any setup problems.
I forget if I've posted in this thread already or not, but I play bass (classical upright and metal electric) and halfass at guitar. Sooner or later I'm going to actually spring for a MD player and be able to resurrect my old demos, but for the moment all I have out is this:
Tenebral Presence demo. (be careful, crufty free hosting site)
I'm currently working on reviving Coelem, but this means writing new music and to a certain degree learning to play my instruments correctly again. I still have all my calluses, fortunately, but my chops aren't near where I want them to be.
