I've been playing Dwarf Fortress for the last four years. The minecarts alone are a massive update to the game for being one subsystem. You can move magma and water around without having to produce pump parts, throw enemies out of cages, throw dwarves through fortifications, load up the minecart with a couple of hundred green glass serrated discs and crash it into a wall hard enough to send the contents flying in a cone of glittering death...
Proclivities of the players aside, minecarts are not that good at moving rock around. They only hold five chunks of stone, and by the time you get the cart to where it's supposed to be everyone's vacated the area and will have to walk back to refill the cart.
