Thoughts on AnimeUnity Being Verified?

Now I know some of you may have heard about AnimeUnity on YouTube; but if you don't know by this point, it's basically an AMV community-based channel sharing fan-made videos from other editors throughout the internet. I've been meaning to ask this from the beginning, but I had a feeling someone on the forums would pick on me saying something like, "You just want to make money off of AMVs"

Anywho, what are your thoughts on it? For me, I personally don't mind community-based channels like AnimeUnity, (sharing other people's edits and giving credit where it's due). It has helped me find new anime, songs, and AMV editors. Although the only problem I have with this is, of course, their verification and monetized videos on social media sites such as YouTube.. :? How is she/he monetizing other people's edits and the original copyrighted material on their channel? One possible way I believe is by partnering with a third-party YouTube network, but I may be totally wrong.

What are your thoughts? :book:

I have the feeling this will destroy eventually the amv community. Recently I noticed another channel that was also monetizing amvs

Probably this, as all it's doing is encouraging other people to try it.

This will start first in youtube, next will be a massive search for all sites that are involved with AMVs as what happened years ago here

Well, it's certainly made me feel less inclined to make AMVs. Why should I create something that pads someone else's pocket? I'm not in AMVs for "the money" but it is extremely souring to think that some other dude is taking in a cashflow off my work and the works of others. Given that, some of the general AMV community's nonchalance and cavalier attitude towards AU's monetization is baffling to me.

In my mind, if AMVs are going to be a revenue stream for someone (and that someone is NOT the anime company), at least some of that money should go to the AMV editor. As it stands, groups like AnimeUnity are taking advantage of the AMV community's goodwill. I requested a takedown of all my videos from that group, and I would highly encourage others to do the same.

Also: who are the other AMV channels that are verified?

The action you want isn't a voluntary takedown request via email. It's a YouTube take down request. Timed with a dosen other people so that the whole process shuts down the channel for good before they can do anything about it. People wanted to play nice though. That's what you get when you play nice.

Creating AMV's is basically a way to fine-tune what you are seeing vs what others are seeing.

As far as getting paid for making an AMV, why not get paid for doing Translations and Sub-Title-ing 'just released series world-wide?

As for myself, I'm the exception to the rule on this board; I actually MAKE COMMERCIALs for our TV Stations here in Minnesota. I never said that I was any good at doing it but, due to Video Compression Techniques learned here at the ORG, my edits actually play-back just fine over ASTC Channels ... so, in the end; I may not be doing it Right but, they are Cleaner than The Next Guys. ^__^

As an Editor, those who have see my amv's all agree: He Sucks! :p

Personally speaking, I just don't really see the problem as long as credit to the editor is given. It's not like we as editors own the source material anyways. I doubt this person is able to make much from the videos unless the music is either copyright free or anime isn't copyrighted already.
If they tried monetizing a video with copyright material, then youtube will eventually detect the source and disable it. This will earn them a strike from youtube, and more than few will result in account suspension.
How do you know they're monetizing it? Ads don't always mean they're monetizing it. Youtube will display ads if you're using copyrighted material.
I have had ads on some of my amv's after youtube detected the source was copyrighted. Trust me, youtube can be a Bi*ch about copyright material.

Regardless whether this person even makes any money, tbh I don't see anything wrong with it. They're investing their time into it and getting your work out for others to enjoy. I edit as as hobby and one of the things I love is being able to share my work with others who enjoy watching amv's.
