I haven't modified my deck in almost 5 years, but since it was such a good special summoning deck in its time, I kinda expected it to hold up better. I can still beat the younger and less experienced players out there, but the people who play anywhere near tournament level completely outpaced my deck in terms of summoning monsters and controlling the field.
From what I can tell, the current generation of Yu-Gi-Oh players are really big on chain summoning a lot of weak monsters to the field that complement each other. So if you are using a older deck, you'd probably have the advantage in terms of attack strength, but not in terms of monsters on the field at one time. This may sound like a good position to be in, but its not. The current assortment of legal trap cards will put any of the older banned trap cards to shame. So its not only beneficial to have strong monsters on the field, but to also to have ways to constantly add more monsters to the field. If not, your opponent will completely out pace you.
Lastly, the new cards that were introduced in the last season are brutal. One benefit to you is that a lot of the stronger ones can't be normal summoned. I don't remember what the stipulation was, but I remember that my opponents kept filling up their field with fairly weak monsters, and sometimes sacrificing all 5 of them to special summon a single monster.
Note: I came to these conclusions after dueling 4-5 people at Dragon*Con and watching their matches for a few hours. So my analysis of the current Yu-gi-oh playes could be completely off. If you want to use a old deck, I'm confident that you can still have fun while playing against the new cards. But if you want to be a serious player in tournaments, you really do need to buy the newest cards. And it probably won't hurt to watch the newest season of the anime series.
Well, I'm up to date on all the new series. Watched em all so far all the way through. ALl the way up to the current episode of Zexal! which if I'm to be correct is not yet over.
I won a couple city tournaments a while back ago with the old deck I used to own. A played for a few more months afterwards then money issues got tight and I couldn't afford to keep up anymore. But now that problem is alleviated and is no longer an issue. It was because of that issue however that I wound up selling my current deck at the time which I won those city tourney's with to the "House Of Cards" in my town. The owner "Chief" bought my deck off me at the time for 1200 bucks. Due to the immense strength of the deck for the area in which Yugioh was being played. Told me it was nationals worthy and that he could probably find a good buyer for it if I sold it to him, in which he did, so at least I know it went to a good person. The reason he bought it for 1200 was because it was full of cards that at the time were very, super, ultra mega hard to find. I have the deck list somewhere, I'll post it when I find it. Cause I wanted to remake it.
That decks core purpose revolved around my Gemini Elves, Witch Of The Black Forest, Sangan, Spear Cretin and my Nimble Monongas. And the deck was really magic heavy with just a couple or so Traps: Spellbinding Circle, Mirror Force, Dark Mirror Force, Magical Cylinders, Crush Card and Mirror Wall. The Major Magic Cards that the deck counted on revolved around Thousand Knives, Dark Hole, Card Destruction. Harpies Feather Duster, Raigeki and Swords Of Revealing Light.
Like I said, I can give a full deck list once I find it if your interested in what was all in that deck, but what I stated above were some of the carrds in it that I can remember off the top of my head that I used a lot from it. The deck had I think 43-45 cards in it. I remember that cause I liked to keep the deck small cause I liked being able to draw out the cards I needed quicker so as to not be stuck with junk for turns on end.
But, I would love to get back into competitive play. And plan on spending a lot of Cashola next month on roughly every bosster pack I can find.
Believe me, I would love to make a deck like the one I used to have a long time ago, but apparently, some of the cards I listed that were in that deck are no longer allowable. so, I will have to make due with learning all the new cards.
Believe me. If I could make that deck again. Versus the new Cards Series Or Not. I believe that my old deck would still trash a lot of the newer ones.
But I am open to any advice you guys are willing to give. I really need to make this new deck but I need some good direction in order to do so.
What do you guys think?
