I am not sure how the response of this thread will be.
But I kindly ask you not to troll around - please.

As many of you might know I am suffering from cancer, neuroblastoma to be more exact. And I have been fighting it for over a year now, and is going through chemotherapy as we speak. After the summer 2010, I thought I was "cured", but I had a relapse this summer. Therefore, the "poster"-text is a bit incorrect. But the first time mine was discovered I had the tumor surgically removed, and I lived healthy for 7 months after that.

Do you have any experience of this horrible illness, in any form, sick yourself, or a related or someone you know?
This is a thread for discussing, talking on the topic and maybe even coping with the feelings towards the illness.

Please - if you will, share your story.

Thank you,
Magnus.

My dad was diagnosed with cancer in 2004 and passed away in early 2008. He had non-hodgkins lymphoma which is a pretty rare skin cancer.

He had chemotherapy for a few months in 2005 which got rid of most of his scab wounds and had a bone marrow transplant in April of 2007 which apparently got rid of the cancer. My dad was able to return to work for a few months until it relapsed in Nov 2007 and he passed away in Jan 2008 due to internal medical complications with the cancer and medication.

It's been over 3 years since he's passed and it's still been tough without him.

My Grandma had cancer a long time ago (before I was born) which she had part of her upper mouth and one of her eye's removed (i call her cyclops >.> she loves me, i know it :P). She's like 70-80 now, has 3 kids and a handful of grandchildren. I think my mom was diagnosed with a form of cancer when I was really young, I don't remember all the details but as far as I know everything is fine. I haven't asked her about it since. My Uncle (dad's side) has a minor version of leukemia. Based on what I've been told it's not serious, just something he needs to keep in check.

Hey Zetzu, just to let you know, we're all thinking about you and supporting you. Keep on fighting and being strong.

Yea, I had a friend with secondary liver cancer who died 4 years ago. He was very humble and never thought ill of anyone. He was hired by my dad actually to work on installing theater systems. My dad called him the best employee he'd ever had because he would always be consistent with his tasks. He never complained and when the topic of his cancer would come up, he would always joke about it and laugh. Optimism was always his mindset and I don't recall a moment where he ever was dissatisfied with where he was at in life. He was a good example to me and I always admired how he always influenced people around him to be happy, even when his chemotherapy had altered his appearance so much, he would still be the same. I sometimes get disheartened and even angry whenever I think out of all the people in the world, why cancer would settle on a loving person like him. But I believe my friend would probably correct me if he knew how I thought.

Imagine it, you ask about relations with this illness and I have to deal with it everyday of my life.

What I truly believe about cancer is that when you have enough support from your family, friends, and even people from churchs, miracles occurs. Today I found out the case of 3 patients with 3 different kinds of cancer, so beeing the person that has to say: I'm sorry but all the tests for cancer we applied are positive, it's not really something you want to do.

But I like to be honest and talk with the patients about the possibilities. Medicine is not something that everything should happen as the books or the experienced doctors states. Imagine that I'm exposed to radiation and even when I already removed a Teratoma from my left ear, possibilities from another kind of cancer are always open for me.

I just have to live helping people here with their medical problems and that would be enough for me

I'm sorry for your loss Castor, may your father rest in peace. You can never replace the loss of a loved one, you will just have to learn to live on and remember the good times and memories with the person and keep those close to your heart. And one day, you'll make it through. :)

Pwolf, quiet a family history there, hopefully you won't catch anything. Glad that everyone seems to be fine now though :)

Thank you and I'm sorry to hear, McDirty. Liver cancer is hell, since it is - from what I know - so far incureable.
To be optimistic and have a positiv out-look helps a great amount to deal with the illness, I used to joke about it everytime it was brought up too, but now after I relapsed - I started to look at it more seriously, and only joke it off if I think it takes too big part of a conversation say around the dinner-table or so. But your friend was a tough fighter, and I hope he'll rest in peace. It really is a hard seat to be in as a patient, because people around you will look at you differently after they hear you're ill. I guess joking and not seeming to care much for it is a way for us to get away from the fact that we are ill and may be treated indifferently. I know I did that, this time however, I've choosen to be honest with myself - but not be miserable :)

Tritio, my man, I cannot even imagine how hard it must be for you to leave such a life-changing message to your patients.
I am also very glad that you are dedicating your life to this, and I will always be thankful for what you and all the people in the department does for us suffering from the illness. Also, I hope you yourself never have to suffer from any more tumors or radiation.

Thank you all for responing. I think it is, in a way, nice to hear other peoples stories.
It in a way gives me some strength I guess, hehe.

Anyone else with a story to share, please do. It will be read, I garanteu you that much.

Many years ago my grandmother had breast cancer. She had to have a mastectomy, but she pulled through it alright and has been without relapse. I was too young at the time to fully appreciate how scary a thing it was. Back then, I never realized how easy it would be to lose her to that, but now that I'm older and realize these things I'm truly grateful that she made a full recovery.

My mother died from Breast Cancer when I was 6 years old, so I don't know how long she had it as I wasn't aware of many things back then. Medicine has improved leaps and bounds since the 80s though so I have hope for you, and I think you will pull through.

Wow I had no idea man. Guess I've been out of the loop for too long. I hope everything works out good in the end. I bet it's tough, but that's what you have friends for. <3

Not that rare apparently. My cousin, that I grew up in the same house with, survived that about 6 years ago. She's okay now, the chemo got it and she's been clean since (well, 'clean' is a relative term though since she still does drugs these days and shit .__.) Was very lucky for her, though - it was detected fairly late and had actually started metastasizing. Luckily where she lives the healthcare system is exceptionally good at rapidly moving to aggressive treatment.

It made me very wary myself. Not wary enough though since apparently I ignored a cyst for many months, until it blew up and became inflamed a couple of weeks ago. It was benign though and got taken out without trouble, but that's still a bit of a wake-up call. Gotta be careful with this kind of stuff.

And that's just Cancer, not any of the other stuff my family has. My brother, father, uncles, cousins, grandfather, and great grandfather all have/had various gastrointestinal diseases. My dad also passed away from a heart attack 8 years ago but the cause was due to the pain medication he was taking though so that's not really something I have to worry about.

You could say I've had some experience with this sort of thing, unfortunately.

My maternal grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer in the early 90s. She handled all the treatments like a true fighter and beat it back into remission. It ultimately came back and took her in October of 99.

In 1996 or 1997, her sister (my great aunt) was found to have an advanced form of cancer that was believed to have started in her lungs or breast - it had advanced so fast, and she had neglected to go to the doctors for so long, that it quickly spread to her brain - she died Christmas Day 1997.

Around the same time, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had a mastectomy soon after my grandmother's cancer came back and everything on that front was fine. Her other severe problem, chronic alcoholism, led to her living a vagabond life where she was routinely homeless, never taking her medicine, and in horribly poor health. It's believed the cancer came back and coupled with all her other problems, led to her death in January of '10.

My maternal grandfather has been living with a tumor on his spine for the past 6 months or so. It's very malignant and his stubbornness to not have to go through what his wife did led him to put off the surgery to the point where it's almost inoperable. His doctors have said that he has about 6 months left.

The other side of my family tree isn't much better. Grandmother suffered for over three decades, bedridden with MS; My grandfather survived colon cancer, and my aunt is a breast cancer survivor who's now very active in fundraising campaigns.

I've recently switched doctors and had to go through the reflection that comes with filling out a detailed family medical history report that took several pages of notes and an hour long session with my doctor to go over.

My moms side of the family is riddled with cancer. They think its hereditary but its still decently rare through her family tree. Her brother though found out he has cancer just recently actually. Its sad cause he just broke his drug addiction and had a new look on his life and family, even turned towards god. My moms talked to him recently and he said that he thinks this is gods way of testing him. He's not giving up after having just got his life back together and going through chemotherapy and something else i forget to try and shrink it to possibly remove it surgically. He's pretty strong willed, I've talked to him a few times even when he was a druggy back in california. I doubt this will break him.

Not really cancer related but thought I'd share:
My dad has renal failure which is basically total shutdown of the kidneys. He also has thyroid problems and neuropathy. His health is pretty much a total reck right now but he still trucks along like its nobodies business. He even recently has been applying for jobs. They live on disability right now but he wants to work pretty bad even though he can barely walk due to the pain in his feet.

I remember you saying you had pain in your feet as well. You might want to flat out ask your doctor if its not the beginning stages of neuropathy cause apparently its common among cancer patients too. Not to scare you, more like inform you. I doubt you actually have it already. That and my dad waited too long to seek medical help, it could have been prevented.

There is a 50% chance that me and my brother will have it cause its hereditary. Doctor told me I should get tested for it and I told him I'm better off not knowing till knowing is critical.

All of this is actually why I recently changed my profession from writing to med tech.
"The people cannot be [...] always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to [...] the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to public liberty. What country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned [...] that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson

Almost 10 years, ago, we lost my step-mother to cancer. She was only in her 30s, and they caught it kinda late, so she only lived for a few months after that.
A couple years later, my father found out he had cancer in his throat, but after some extensive radiation treatments, he was cured. About a year ago now, he found out he had a cancerous tumor, on his head, but it was able to be removed with surgery.
I also had an aunt who fought cancer for over 10 years before finally passing away in this past year.

I think I'll probably get it one day. It runs in my family pretty hard on my dad's side.

How odd, my patients believe that I already know everything about cancer, when in reality there are several unknown facts about it. Why some normal cells that suddenly started to change, why some of them appear at certain age, why not all the people are affected, are still facts that we keep studying everyday.

Hoping this should work fine Magnus <3
