I'd venture a guess that someone would probably steal a lot more than just a desktop if they broke in to rob the place. The added cost in penalty if they're caught for each item isn't really measurable (unless they take something like a gun).

My important data and projects are backed up on a personal file server and off-site (yes, in The Cloud). My laptop's internal storage is encrypted.

Loss of a laptop would be an extremely irritating financial hit -- I probably would not replace it immediately -- but I would not lose very much data. I am more worried about someone finding a weakness in the operating system's encryption or my usage thereof which would expose personal data, leading to far more severe consequences, e.g. identity theft.
