Looked neat Brad. I was a bit sceptical about the neon-green typo. at first but it sort of made sense with the overall colorful surounding.
Animation went smoothly and the concept was well presented, nice job

Here's a little inspiration for the day

http://vimeo.com/3241601

This is a spot done for The Anime Network by Nando Costa who is one of my favorite motion designers. It's just got a really tight, clean, fluid style that I just dig on. He doesn't skimp on the graphic design either. Every transition goes to a lock-up that could be it's own unique styleframe. That's something that's good to get into the habit of. Look at a spot and then try and figure out what the original boards would've looked like. It helps when thinking about how to set up your own boards.

Not bad :) Cool to see you doing stuff.

Here's some critique:

As you pointed out in your description, the strokes themselves are kinda messy. You definitely see the repetition in the brush "shape", giving it a distinctly non-realistic look.

The camera movements + cuts were kind of jarring. Like, you'd cut to a shot where the camera wasn't moving, right in the middle of the camera just starting to ramp up speed.

Would've liked to have seen a bit more easing in the animation overall.

Maybe bring more orange into that background. Or add a little subtle texture to the background. Like oriental parchment or silk or something.

I thought the splashes at the end looked really good, though as you said, they're stock :P Nevertheless you implemented them well from a compositional standpoint.

I'm still waiting on Jon to finish his up before I start a new theme + motif (since this whole thing really started as a way to get him specifically to do new stuff).

Thanks a bunch Brad for the wonderful comments. I'm going to do another calligraphy vid like this, so I definitely appreciate and will apply the critique.

I actually liked the cuts, they were unorthodox and kinda increased suspension/tension. It felt really dynamic because of them (and considering how static the whole scene IN FACT was).

It wasn't that I had a problem withThe cuts themselves, it was the placement of them. Like, the camera would slow down, then speed up and cut soon after. Was just too jarring for me, considering the "serenity" of the overall look and feel.

Here's my second vid. This one doesn't follow the current theme and motif, but I made this in order to improve my skills with the last calligraphy vid that I posted. I'll definitely focus on a different concept for my next vid.

Much better quality in those brush strokes. They looked great. The only thing I could say was a little "meh" for me was the green color in the gradient. Too "100% green" for me. Otherwise, quite cool.

I'm thinking I'm gonna go ahead and put up a new theme/motif here within the next couple days. I wanted to wait for John to finish his up, but I'm getting impatient :O

I didn't like that some of the strokes moved towards other strokes. That was... weird >.>

Especially when two of them nearly fell together before the end.

This was a 3d axis problem. Something I'll need to pay attention to next time.

Alright. I've decided to go ahead and start the next project. For those of you still working on Fake, please continue.

THEME: Unexpected
MOTIF: Argyle

Remember the motif just has to appear in some way, not be the dominating visual, unless you want it to be. The theme of "unexpected" can be taken however you like.
