The contradictions noted by dj_ultima_the_great would throw a lot of doubt onto it. The euphoric wide-eyed stare does (or did) seem more like those that put on, but if someone really is
that crazy, it's not that big of a leap. Heck, just look as Westboro.
I've also seen plenty of real-life examples of this very sort of argument (and the
exact argument about the Sendai earthquake) from the site Poe's law was
formulated on. I've been posting on there since before Poe's law existed, and have gotten an eye-full on numerous occasions of the most ridiculous and quite honestly, warped, views that the extreme right - Religious Right or otherwise - can come up with. Sadly, I'm not prepared to bet most of those encounters are actually fake; there's a reason the site is probably one of the most drawn from on Fundies Say The Darnedest Things. On the 'brighter' side, the majority of the extremism on there tends to be contained to certain sections, and you learn to avoid them after a while so that the risk of self-induced concussion is greatly minimized.
