Devolution wrote:oh there's LOTS wrong with the car i was driving, but the mileage was primarily due to an extremely weak automatic transmission, and a complete lack of maintenance on the part of the old owners. they never checked the fluid level or condition, and never replaced the filter, so when i got it all you could smell when you popped the tranny dipstick was burnt transmission fluid. it took 2 quarts of fluid and a full bottle of Lucas Transmission Fix before it would shift without hesitating. i've put the minimum amount of work into it to get it running reliably enough that it won't kill itself anytime soon. but for the price i paid for it(180$ safetied and on the road), and the condition the body is in(PO fixed the rocker panels with newspaper and fiberglass :S they were nonexistent beforehand), i'm not willing to invest any more money into it than i have to, so i just put up with shit city mileage and didn't drive it very often.

hence why i'm so happy that i get to drive something else :D

I never understood how people could let their vehicle get into that kind of state. If you're paying thousands of dollars for a vehicle, the least you can do is take care of it. It'll save you thousands more down the road (no pun intended).

LOLZ. We buy used cars! Buying a vehicle is probably the worst investment.

Some people barely know how to put gas in the damn thing, let alone know what's wrong with it.

You don't need to know what's wrong with your car to take care of it. :P Wash it, take it in to be oil sprayed if you can't do it yourself, change oil, grease shaft, etc. Just perform regular maintenance and your car will give back.

Well, that much is a given. Especially when that handy "check engine" light pops on.

What I meant is when people [like my auto-mechanic friend or my stepfather who is a car dealer] expect me to know about some -insertlongmechanicalwordhere- part not working properly because my -insertanotherreallylongmechanicalwordhere- is making a noise that you can only hear if you tilt your head at a 45 degree angle and start the engine at JUST the right moment, while on a Sunday when the Pope is in a particularly good mood and the Europeans are feeling saucy.

What was my point again? O-o

I bought a new car in 09, will probably be my last (and first) brand new car purchase. I absolutely love the vehicle, and I am going to drive it for as long as I possibly can. I'm hoping it lasts me to 200,000 mi at least. It's a Toyota (Scion), and I'm the type that does an obsessive amount of research before buying something as expensive as a car. Having at least done it, I find myself thinking every so often about some of the other Scions I saw used that only had 20k miles on them and were a bit cheaper. Prior to the Scion I had a Nissan sentra I bought used for $7K and put 150K on no problem. It's all about maintenance :D

Woo, new Toyota owners represent!

In other news, despite crippling lag, I just passed 10,000 point mark in Pokemon Dream World! Now I can find Marvel Scale Dratini, Drought Vulpix, Swift Swim Poliwag, and Magic Bounce Natu! :D

I got my merit scholarship \o/ !

Along with the rest of my financial aid info, turns out I've got my tuition and fees covered by grants, scholarships, and federal loans with the exception of about 4k, for the entire year. I was expecting to have to take out a lot more in private loans to cover that, so things are lookin' up.

Though both my enrollment and financial advisors are exceptionally inept. I now have to prove that I have been admitted to their school (Uhhhh.....) as well as prove that I graduated high school, because the transcript didn't do it for them.

And  for the advisers, but sadly that's almost like a norm with school bureaucracies in my experience...
