Fun with Naming Your Hardware

Postby Monitor Zombie » Tue Jan 04, 2011 11:36 pm

Can I just say that I love the ability to set up names for my externals/Iphone/Ipod/whatever crap I can find to stick in my computer's ports. I have WAY too much fun with it.

Jaken - My bright green ipod shuffle (because it's green, too small to be useful and my dad gave it to me so I'd feel bad if I got rid of it)
Reno - My iphone in a purty red case (Cuz he's slick and hip, can do anything and was dropped on his head as a child and now occasionally freezes up or acts like a retarded drunk)
Spoon! - My 1 TB drive (I was having trouble deciding on a name and happened to remember)
The Penguin Whisperer - My 2 TB drive (I have no idea, excuse or explanation for the origins of this name, but I almost named it 'The Companion Cube' cuz it's square and silver)
The Destiny Prognostication Machine - My baby (known to others as a Macbook pro) named because it is the epic machine of epicness (It was this or Johnny 5 and I didn't want to jinx myself by naming my laptop after a malfunctioning robot)

What did you name your awesome tech?

I've not really had too much fun with naming things lately. New laptop is coming soon though, I'll have to name that.
Otherwise, for the moment

Space Groove II - main gaming desktop
Mushroom House - older media desktop (currently out of commission, needing reformat)
Smallbeast - iPod

I don't give my internal drives separate names except for "Storage, Projects, Akazawa, Backup" things like that...and for some reason I don't have a name for my phone or mp3 player...

Athalon x64 box - Natsume
Athalon x2 box - Honoka
HTPC - Shiori
Laptop - Momoko
Iphon4 - Makoto
Ipod Classic - Nate's Ipod (I know, I broke the cycle with this one, but since it doesn't goto the internet it doesn't count!)
Phenom II x6 box (waiting for final parts to be delivered to be built) - Unsure as of yet

I name my systems based on their mood, temperament, and case design usually. I'll figure out what to call my new PC once I've built her and can figure out what she'll be like. (and what color the case will glow)

Main System - Aoi
HTPC - HTPC
Netbook - Hamustah (I used to make fun of my college roommate's early model eeePC, remarking that it was something sized for a hamster, I found this name fitting)
gTablet - I don't know that I can name it... I'm going to look into that though.

I've turned off my wireless router, so I'm not broadcasting a name for that one... and I haven't got my old C2D system into a case yet for being a file-server/??? yet either.

I usually pick a show with a decent-sized cast and name my machines after characters. My current scheme is Record of Lodoss War.

Deedlit - Main system (C2Q, 4 GB RAM)
Parn - My Laptop (C2D, 4GB RAM)
Slayn - Nettop portable playback computer.
Shiris - Asus Eee netbook
Spark - My old system, kept around as a backup (A64 single-core, 2 GB RAM)
Neese - A WAMP web server in a VM on Parn
Etoh - My old PowerBook G4
Ghim - My WD TV Live. It's only on the network so it can get firmware updates.
Orson - 120 GB iPod Classic

I don't name most of my external drives, though. I have too many (5 full-size drives, 5 USB flash sticks).

Also, my silver '02 Ford Focus is called 'Folken' and my dark green '94 Camry was called 'The Moon Lander'

Since we're on the subject of names, I have a cat named Zeus, Lina (Short for thumbelina cus she's got massive thumbs) and another named Kit (Not short for KitKat or Kitten but K.I.T.T. the Knight Industries Two Thousand)
