Team Inception: Dream Police

Postby SQ » Sun Jul 18, 2010 2:01 pm

Wuwu and I were talking about Inception (awesome movie btw). He speaks of how all the anime trailers he's seen has sucked and then goes out to make an awesome one (will he actually? Probably not, but he claims to have ripped footage already).

He then links me to THIS.

ttoally citing that as my inspiration

Things that should not have been done that were done. And awesome.
And also Inception.

OH, UNRELATED.
I was also linked to something else that was pretty laughable today.
Foreshadowing?

Inception = so much freaking suspense. I don't have anything else to really add to the topic, but you are right that video is pretty well done.

As soon as the thing started spinning, I knew what the ending was going to be. But I was HOPING it wouldn't be the way it was.
Stupid.

Just proves how awesome Nolan is, I guess. xD

I suspected Nolan was going to end it like that towards the middle of the movie when he set it up, but I really wanted a conclusion and not have it left open like that D: The audience laughed also. I was so tempted to yell "MOTHER FUCKER" but there were kids and I had to stay civil.

Spoiler :
Personally I don't think it was all a dream. I think, if it was, there would've been a lot more crazy stuff going on (his dream after all) and we would've seen Mal a lot more during the planning stages of the heist. If his projection of her was always there to get in his way, she would've appeared a lot sooner IMO. I also think the fact that it started to wobble a bit means it wasn't a dream because IIRC when he describes what happens when he's in a dream, he says it spins perfectly and indefinitely.

Someone did yell that in our theatre :uhoh:

Spoiler :
Same, I dont think it was a dream either. It did start to wobble and I think he did that just to mess with us.

Spoiler :
I actually somewhat disagree. I thought that at the end he was in reality, but when I gave it further thought, I've come to the conclusion that it's well...inconclusive like he intended. The things that make me consider the other side are two-fold:

1) After they first go into the dream state to test out the Chemist's formula, he goes to the sink to wash his face off and then attempts to spin the top. He is interrupted by Saito and doesn't try again. This is the first clue that he himself suspects he might be in a dream now.

2) At the end of the movie, his kid's clearly have not aged a day. His daughter's voice in the middle of the movie clearly sounds like she is older now (and upset). At the end of the movie, she looks exactly as he remembered years ago. The ending was basically his "ideal" situation and he even leaves to see his kids instead of looking at the top, almost admitting that he doesn't care if this is a dream or not.

I don't think either of these are conclusive since as many have noted, the top does wobble, but basically neither side has the concrete evidence to say he is dreaming or he is awake. Again, my guess is this was Nolan's intention.

In any case, I liked the movie quite a bit. Probably the best one I've seen this summer. Christopher Nolan is 5 for 5 with respect to all his films I've seen (Memento, The Prestige, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and now Inception). I'm excited to see how he concludes his Batman trilogy.

Spoiler :
While the ambiguity was totally intended, and very predictable and left open ended, I still liked the execution and practically the entire movie I'm just sitting and waiting for the freaking van to hit the water.. The development of the characters was lovely and the acting was really good!
@_@ so much freaking suspense! I enjoyed it a lot and I'm glad I went to the midnight showing :3 it was worth it.

I think only Nolan could've pulled that "make 2 seconds last an hour" thing off without making it feel like a terrible DBZ plot development.

As for the spoiler stuff, I fully agree with dwchang. But my personal opinion is, because I'm a pessimist:
Spoiler :
After he went into the third layer or whatever, he never awoke from THAT PARTICULAR dream.
Because, if I remember correctly, it never did show them killing themselves to get out.
And when DiCaprio was in that level before, he and his wife had to kill themselves to get out.
So either that was some plot hole/not thought well writing, or SOMETHING IS AMISS THERE.
(Or I missed/forgot about DiCaprio and Saito killing themselves to get out that last time)

SLIGHTLY RELATED:
Wuwu actually did make that Inception anime trailer. I have the beta. He did some gender swapping though so I'm pretty sure he's looking for a few VAs to voice over some of the lines. :3

At the risk of being a spoilsport I must say I was terribly disappointed by Inception. I even seriously considering leaving the theater at the halfway point. It was way overlong and tried to hammer its point across. When the team entered the third or fourth layer of dreams I wanted it all to stop already. At the end during the scene with the children it was hard not to laugh at the sappy sentimentality. Di Caprio was very convincing as he's been in his last films, on the other hand Ellen Page didn't help this film much.

Meh, maybe I was expecting a different kind of movie. I'd still like my €6.80 back.
