This may just be artistic differences, but I couldn't get into the finals here because (I was told) there was a lack of focus on a concept. I was under the impression that's what the "Etc" category was for. Still, I know that video was a lot to process in such a short time. It was a one-minute AMV with each scene running between 1-2.5 seconds.

The version I submitted has the rolling fish ball scene replaced by something better but that's nothing to do with this. :P

Anyway, even though I was on NekoCon's AMV staff, I couldn't get it played during "Non-competing" because of a one-second clip of one of the Asu sisters in bondage, fully clothed, with a few tentacles waving around - NOT touching her or doing anything that implied sexual contact. Someone in the screening process decided it was inappropriate.

Everyone else I've shown this to loves it but I dunno. You be the judge.

My best friend's 8 year old sister knows what it means, and that isn't even the fault of her parents. She gets it all from going to school.

Did anybody have this problem with that one subtitled video that made Otakon's finals for comedy? "Have you been high today?" "I love you inside Ed." "I like to swim in his bee-jay." I'm sure a lot more children were in attendance for that than here yet I don't recall a lot of complaints. There was maybe one kid there for this contest and he wasn't in the room most of the time. For the video to win, obviously there were enough in attendance to get the context and not be offended.

I'd be more worried about what my kid could be exposed to by merely walking around and looking at costumes, or language they would hear rather than what they'd see in an amv contest. The con-goers certainly don't censor themselves for the youngsters.

/agreed, the kid is more likely going to be observing things like girls wearing next to nothing down the hallways that's going to be more problematic then a simple song, in fact my friend's 10 year old was in the audience for the screening, and he laughed at the song, but still to this very second doesn't know what it means nor does he care.

Yeah that's probably the kid I saw and the adult with him didn't seem at all bothered.

That sounds like me as a kid. My parents would talk about all kinds of dirty laundry regarding family or friends and I couldn't go repeating it. :P. As for taped boobs, I think at AUSA (or maybe Katsu) last year there was someone who cosplayed this character from Bleach:

and I actually had to give her credit because if there was anything right about that costume, it was the extreme level of accuracy!

I got my first place prize!!

2 manga, a DVD and a shirt!

To be honest i didn't think I was going to get anything, this is really awesome. I'm very psyched up, Christmas came early!
This is how I see things:
A bad AMV makes it look easy
A good AMV makes it look fun
A great AMV makes it look hard
However, the best AMVs make it look impossible

Thanks for the 3rd place prizes, Vic. Hoping to have something worthy of competing for next year (Otakon and AUSA).

I wasn't really sure my video would fit into any of the categories so I was surprised to find that it was going to be shown. I must say, I am very happy that I even made it to the finals since this was only my second attempt at an AMV. I didn't rank at all according to these results though. Can't say I'm all that shocked but I wish I could have been there to see all the videos on display. Congrats to the winners, especially for the action catagory, that's a hard one to come out on top of.
