KUMORICON 2009 AMV Contest - TWO WEEKS 'til Deadline!

Postby Geirr » Sat Jul 04, 2009 2:04 pm

OK Gang! We are at a little under TWO WEEKS to go for Kumoricon's 2009 AMV Contest.

Kumoricon will be bigger than ever this year; they are projecting 33% growth over last year which means over nine six thousand anime fans! You do not need to be a convention member and you do not need to be present to win. We ship prizes all over the world. Typically prizes are Anime DVDs, box sets, figurines and other collectibles. (We try to work with media region codes for contest winners where possible.)

Contest rules are at: http://www.opusnet.com/guy1656/k2009-amv.htm

We have SEVEN categories this year:

- TENSION: Any story or strong theme holding the audience in high suspense throughout. This could be (but not limited to) situations like: a conflict of wills, a calculated risk during a race against time, or confronting an ominous and shifting threat, or exploring and probing an unknown menace.
- GENKI!: The sugar-blast category. Light and fun exuberant works, possibly using dance beat. Themes with a fun-for-all, positive feel or outcome.
- JAPANESE MUSIC: An open category using any sort of Japanese music, from traditional to enka to J-pop.
- RETRO: This category has FOUR conditions. The AMV must meet any TWO of them:
(a) MIDI music from 'classic' game console systems.
(b) Audio source is anything created before 1983.
(c) All anime is 20th century.
(d) Video must appear as monochrome or black and white. You may add a sepia tone to the light color for the 'faded old film' look. (Grainy film treatments, longitudinal vertical scratches, or 'strands of hair and other cruft stuck in the projector window' effects are optional.)
Your choice - pick any two from the above.
- RANDOM AMUSEMENT This is a broader category than Comedy / Parody; it also includes bizarre or off-beat works that con-fuse as well as a-muse.
- TRAILERS Includes fake commercials, TV spots, and movie and game trailers. May use actual advertising audio or a fictitious creation in the style of a commercial, trailer, or fake episode opening credits. Serious and intriguing dual-openers will also show in this category. Comedy trailers may get redirected to RANDOM AMUSEMENT.
- ACTION & EFFECTS This is where the high-speed music and flashy stuff meet. Take your Bonine® and buckle in!

So far we are looking especially for Japanese Music and Random Amusement (Comedy) entries.

You may submit by PM to me, or e-mail a download URL, or by mail (see rules page for mailing address and e-mail.)

Awesome categories (I always like it when contests try to stay away from just plain old genres)

I'll try to submit something if I manage to make some sort of "random amusement" video before the deadline.

My vid just slipped from the RETRO category. The song is from '84. :( But as far as I understood, its enough if I pass 2 conditions, so I just have to put some sepia effect to my amv. Poor me...

Hey, thanks for your interest, everyone!

One note about the 'rules.'
Although I coordinate the contest, personally I exclude myself from the judges' panel.
Past years' panels have used the rules as guidelines rather than OBEY OR DIE strictness.
Example: Duration limit 4:40, but if yours is 4:55 and the judges find it entertaining, they've tended to let it slide in. They once passed a 6min AMV, because they felt that the 'story' really took that long to tell, plus one comment was 'Wow - 5 min into this thing and I felt like it had only gone two minutes!" In other words, the intensity of the work held their attention throughout, so they selected it.

So '1984' vs '1983' might not be a problem. Give it a try as-is, and if you want to add sepia tone betwnn now and 17-Jul, that's fine too.

Hope to hear from y'all soon!

I have a little question about some titles, which show the name of the AMV/the creator's name. Because I didn't find anything about that, will it be a problem if I include some titles with the name of the AMV and my nickname  Or I should remove them (again  )

The TOTAL duration should not exceed 4mn 40 sec. This includes your bumpers, ED credits, etc.

The only other thing you'd have to heed is to make sure 90% of the total duration is ANIME.
(See rules for details & suggestions)

The judges will select the AMVs they feel will be MOST ENTERTAINING for the audience to watch.
So if your credits OP/ED etc are still part of the full intensity of the project, then go for it.

When a category is run, a 10 to 15 second category intro plays, then the all the AMVs in that category are run back to back with 2 seconds of black between them.

Then, to help the audience with their ballots, after every two to four categories, a 'refresher' is run in which we show a category still (4 second hold) then 10-second clips selected from each entry to re-joggle everyone's memory. During these refreshers, the AMV clip appears in approx 480p wide in a larger field, with its title above in block letter text. There is a number in front of each title which corresponds to numbers on the ballots, for people to mark their favorite selection.

The refresher is the only time we actually declare the AMV title to the audience. We don't show creators names, forum nicknames, etc at all, but you are free to include those in your work. Or NOT.

So - you don't need titles & credits, but feel free to include them if you like 'em, as long as you do your best to keep the whole work ENTERTAINING. (And PG-13)

thank you for the answer ^^ My AMV title is mixed with the AMV itself, more than that, it is part of the AMV, that's why I asked ^^

OK, I'm out. My AMVs lenght is 05:26. It is impossible to edit a 04:40 vid because of the song. So good luck everyone else!

That means that you can try even that your AMV is over 5 minutes ;)

Actually, YES.

You can always TRY anything.

Whether it gets PICKED is up to the judges. If a story or theme, or the lyrics of the song make you feel you MUST go long, them make your best judgement. Holding the audience on the edge of their seat for 5min 40sec works. Just imagine them exhaling after it finishes, and saying a collective 'Whoa, that was INCREDIBLE' and no one was looking at their watch.

If on the other hand, two minutes into the AMV, people are whipping to writstwatches and texting, and thinking 'Oh, no, it's not even HALF-OVER yet...' well that's 'Duration not so much, pleeeez,' and the judges may not select that entry.

I guess he's Yashiro :P

btw... if you don't keep the rules strictly with us, I can ONLY enter with my .org style AMV, because I have problems with my computer, and I cannot render anything in acceptable quality. I mean I can make the conditions of the video encoding, but it's too rough and completely worse to watch. From this independently, I exceed the time limit anyway. Reading the previous posts I think those 20 sec doesn't matter what I'd be able to cut from the vid's end. And you just hit it, I'm around 05:40 ;)
