Bull you can just keep up at it, this is coming from the guy that took a decade to get into pro, i ain't got nothing to complain about. Be glad you made it in, a lot of people didn't. If you wanna get in for drama then focus on it and it'll happen. You need not have a complicated video to get in i got into comedy with one of the simplest videos i've ever made.

See you guys at the con.

lol well i've tried for drama the last 3 years (with both simple videos and complicated) and nuthin. not saying i'm disappointed for making it into Pro at all, just agreeing that Drama (imo or at least for me) is the toughest category to get into. comedy i can't count cuz i've only entered it once :P

Surprisingly drama videos are one of my favorite types of videos to make since they can be personal. I actually haven't done a drama video since 2005, but I'd rank some of my drama videos as my favorite editing experiences. Drama is usually the most competitive and flooded category of any contest.

I've had one in the works for years, but I've been so lazy about it.

Please do that instead of the whole torch passing, don't become an old man. Young at heart an all that. Or as George Carlin put it an Old F*&&(*.

Er... it's not quite that simple, but...

My advice is to try and do something different. For the drama category, I kinda hinted at it earlier. Since everyone goes for the heavier side of drama, try doing a video that's uplifting or inspirational. Do something that's different from the norm.

Second suggestion: Use good source footage. There were still far too many vids that had divx logos or subs, and some of them were really good too. However, Technical Merit is 1/3rd of the judging criteria, and a video with logos or subs will take it in the shorts in that area. Frankly, I feel it should be a disqualifiable offense, but Michael is much kinder than I. I had more to say about this, but there's really not much I could say that hasn't already been said.

What about action?

I tried the dramatic-actiony (can you even call it that) approach with my Geass vid and I guess it didn't work :( lol

Your video conveyed a good message, it matched very well with Kanon/Air/Clannad as each of those stories can relate to your song 'very' closely. which is why i thought it was a good concept.
I guess the down fall is, if people haven't seen those series, they might feel a little distant to it.

but in any event, very good video.

Thanks very much and I'm glad you could see the similarities. :)

Oh yes, "You Are Loved" is a refreshing drama video in that its neither depressing nor violent. I'm not really familiar with Kanon/Air/Clannad except for the names and seeing footage in other videos, but I enjoyed the message.

Thank you!! :) I'm thrilled that I am getting positive feedback! I tried something a little different and more in depth and based on real life situations for drama so I'm extremely glad it's touching people. ^_^

Studio Hybrid, I highly recommend Air, Clannad and Kanon 2006. I've never seen the original Kanon but I plan to very soon. It's just really hard going from this:

to this:

The original doesn't look all that bad but the new version is very top notch. If you do plan to watch both, you may want to watch the original first. :)

Sorry, I didn't mean to start going so much off topic, lol. I do agree with the people before though: Drama seems to be the hardest category to get into since it's the most popular category. Just remember that if your video didn't get in, it doesn't mean it's not amazing! :) Drama is the toughest category and there are many different types of Drama videos that can be made. Some people prefer sad videos to inspirational and vice versa.

Seriously? I thought I saw snippets of the original Kanon in your vid. Then again, I've only seen just a couple of episodes of it, and have yet to see any of new Kanon... ...which I think now is probably a good time to rectify. [digs through DVD collection...] :)

Drama is generally the toughest to get into mostly due to the number of competitors in the field since it is the largest catagory (and still the most broad IMO, one of my videos I really had no idea where to put it).

This is the third year I didn't make it into the finalists at AX, which is funny, because I think I'm now on a cycle system with AX, my first three years entering no videos made it in, the next three I made it in and the most recent three I did not.

Freaking bizzare.

Oh and is there any word on the AMV gathering yet?

And who knows, if there seems to be AMV related stuff like a gathering going on I might even entertain flying down for the contest and gathers, etc

It was quiet amazing last year so I'm expecting this year to be a lot funner.

Man, I haven't been on here in ages. Yeah, what Ryv said about the M&G. Guess we should put a thread up here for those who don't venture over to the AX forums.
