The 3/2 pull down conversion (to make 24fps video NTSC compliant for presentation) may cause
entry video to appear jittery in fast action scenes.

After 3 years of entry i still have a n00b question...

So does that mean if I'm submitting Huffy avi in progressive at 24 fps, it would be converted to 29.97?
If that's the case should I output in 29.97 fps to begin with then....?

thanks..!

sorry for the delayed response...PO.Box is literally flowing over. I went in Friday and there was a full tub of entries. We are working to get caught up.
To your question.
Most programs will handle this conversion automatically. If your video is 24fps then submit it 24fps or convert to 29.97. its your call.
When it gets transferred to DVD for presentation it will be at 29.97 NTSC. Premiere Pro (the program I use) is pretty good about automatically handling the conversions.
It isn't a noob question at all. Most non-professional (meaning doing it for a living) don't have to deal with it so its fine. :)

No worries at all, thanks!
I gather that there would be less surprises to go with 29.97 to start with. I just ended up going up DV NTSC in Premiere pro.

Good luck to everyone!

i had a question about submission in general.
is Pixel Aspect Ratio ever a concern?

I edit all my videos in square pixels, but i know DVD source footage is NTSC 0.9~

is this something that should be mentioned in the rules for future reference?
(i am not even sure if there are issues with this)

If you want to put it in terms of pixel aspect ratio, then yes, this means NTSC 0.9. If you're editing at 640x480 with square pixels, you're going to have to stretch it for the convention version. (Or, if you're editing a widescreen source at 848x480 with square pixels, you're going to have to shrink it to 720x352 and then letterbox.) More here.

awesome, you answered my question perfectly. :) thanks scintilla. btw you submit this year? i miss your work!

*yeah I've been doing it by editing in widescreen (848x480 with square pixels) and then shrinking it and adding letterbox.

I've heard that some huffy entries have been rejected because the file ran slow when you guys tried to play it....

You guys do realize that most computers cant playback a Huffy avi at 100% because of the size and that this issue can vary video to video?

ALL EMAIL NOTIFICATIONS OR ENTRY RECEIPT HAVE BEEN SENT except for 2. Ben Chu (who knows I have them) and one entrant who didn't put an email address on their form. There were one or two that have bounced back to me as invalid email addresses so for the future please be sure to print your email address CLEARLY so I can be sure to enter it into the spreadsheet correctly.

I deeply apologize to you all for taking so long to get the emails out. Between losing my co-director and various other Expo related things (let alone real life) it took me forever to get the notifications out. I apologize. I just sent the last one out 5 minutes ago. even though I had all the entries within the submission deadlines. It just took me forever to catalog them in the spreadsheet.

the initial judging was completed this week and I am not in the process of tabulating the results. I hope to finish that up this evening and get a finalist list out first part of next week.

Again, please accept my apologies to you all for the delays in getting those emails out. We had some really fantastic entries this year. We also had a couple really scary ones. ;)

Thank you to all who entered.
As soon as the finalist list is complete I will be posting it. Expect it first part of next week.

And we only had one honest to god Linkin Ball Z video. Though we did have More DBZ vids this year than last.

Actually my comp plays Huffy fine. I actually love the quality it provides. I just hate the massive file size. 3GB for a 3 minute video feels a little extreme ya know? But it sure is pretty.

It varies from video to video and even scene to scene. I can playback HD h264 MP4s very well, but if there's a scene with a lot of visual information, it will lag for that one scene. With Huffy, this makes it even harder on the computer.

EDIT: Heck I can playback lagarith files with no lag, if the video is simple/doesnt have rainbows flying everywhere.

I'm a little confused, if you can play Huffys ok, then why would any vids get DQ'd for being huffy? Was there anyone else doing the judging maybe? Because like what LittleAtari said, it does vary from video to video, and scene to scene, especially if there's a lot going on.

x2
Oddly enough, I can play huffy's fine most of the time, but if I have an h264 video with tons of flash's everywhere...it lags like a motherfuck
