Just want to say offering cash prizes for an AMV contest is a horrible idea that has the potential to get you in serious shit with the RIAA and anime companies. It's copyright infringement as it is - don't make it for-profit as well.

Thanks for the input guys much needed....When you sell your video for profit that's when you will get into trouble and big trouble...we will be working and asking most of the companies if it is ok to show the videos for a fun and friendly AMV competition, that will give out prizes including one cash prize for our tip winner. Were not selling there Anime for a profit. A profit is when you sell something and make cash from it..no contestant will be selling there AMV's to us nor will we be buying the AMV. We are also going to be putting a Creative Commons Licensing with every video which clearly states that the work under the license is not that of the original maker and still gives all credit to the original maker.

We do have trophies for all of our place winners.

OK the date is right on the first page of our Con website. But just in case you still can't find it the dates are April 10th-12th
Here's the site again...

You don't seem to understand the issue. If you give a cash prize, the recipient (the person that won) is profiting. They are receiving money. It's clear cut.
Secondly - you can't put a CC license on something unless every bit of it is covered under the Creative Commons License. You can ask any or all of the anime companies in the world to give you permissions. And if by some stretch that worked, you still don't have CC rights for the music, unless the music was published under CC.

Yes everything will be under a CC licensing including the music.

But if the crowd wants more swag then we can change it for you guys no problem. Its all about what the con goer's want, which is what we strive for and always ask your your input on. If your not happy or want the prize, whats the point of entering...haha...right?

So this is when we need your help most of all...what kind of prize/s would you like to see in place of the $100 cash?
Would you like DVD'S, voucher to the dealers room, CD'S, Autographed work? (I just got a Edward Elric doll in signed by VIC himself..Woot) Or maybe a bit of it all... just let us know and maybe we can make it happen, we aim to please!

You seem to misunderstand the way licenses work. If the music was not originally released under Creative Commons, then you CANNOT put it under CC without the express permission of the copyright holder (in this case, the record label). Saying "this isn't the editor's original music, but we're attributing the copyright holder" will not fly, as their work is still being used without permission. THAT is where providing cash prizes gets you in trouble, as you are then providing a profit for non-authorized use of copyrighted material.

What you propose would be akin to taking the source code for Windows 7, changing it here and there, and selling it as something else while saying "It's cool! I put all the code under GPL so it's legit!". Not gonna fly...

And now that I've had a chance to read the entire post, I can't help but think you are setting your contest up for failure anyway. Your post is dated the 6th, the original deadline was the 28th, and you tell people they can flood you with up to EIGHT videos? I really hope you're not expecting Skittles quality from your submissions with that kind of time crunch (even if it has been extended by a few weeks).

Without being an asshole (as I sometimes can be), I'll say that the time + the number of videos allowed per editor is only going to end in heartbreak and fail. Not only are you encouraging people to fish for awards, getting even ONE video done in such a short amount of time will likely leave you with a lot of Linkinball-Z videos done in WMM.

actually I enter a lot of cons that don't give away prizes or only give out certificates, and ones I don't win at a lot because 1. I like the crowd (they comment to me that they had seen my video) or 2. because the con staff is nice to me or 3. because I get my videos shown.

Rarely will the prize itself actually sway my interest... though in this case:
(I just got a Edward Elric doll in signed by VIC himself..Woot)

I'd have to burn it in a hole just to satiate my gods....

however if you are looking for ideas for swag instead of cash, then DVDs are usually a good bet because its what amvers (should be) use(ing) to make amvs with...

We just want to give the entrants a chance to send there best of the best work without having to pick and choose. And not all 8 videos are gonna make it to the finals anyway. We have our pre-judging process in which we will watch every video put them into categories and select only about 5 per category to go on to the finals....If I had 200 or more videos to watch well then so be it...It will still take me no more that a day or two to get the finalist picked and ready. And the rules clearly state that you can submit work from the past year as long as it has not been premiered before March 5th, 2007. We already have a great lineup of AMV's ready for pre-judging... and the update is to let people on this site know that they still have a chance to get in a video or two....we want to make sure that we get in the MAX amount of entrants for more a chance to get some unique videos. Not a bunch of Linkinball-Z videos done in WMM as you like to call them.

SO'S TO CLEAR ALL THIS UP WE HAVE CHANGED THE PRIZE TO MORE SWAG...A WONDERFUL PRIZE PACKAGE PUT TOGETHER BY FUNIMATION, A TROPHIE, AND A SPOT ON OUR AM TV FOR 2010. (NO LONGER CASH)

Thanks for all your help guys!!!
