NekoCon 11 AMV Contest: the WINNERS!

Post by Squancho » Sat Aug 30, 2008 5:10 pm

First, I'm not on NekoCon staff. I've just never seen the local convention's AMV contest represented here ever. They have lamented before about not receiving enough entries to fill some categories to make them more competitive, but it may be due to lack of contest promotion here on the 'org. So here it is.

Official convention dates: November 7 - 9, 2008.

Submission deadline has passed. Now we await the list of finalists. Best of luck to all who submitted...

Here, then, is the list of finalists (by actual name):

Adam Miller
Andrew Reshefsky
Brad DeMoss
Cecilia Othersen
Chad Kugel
Connor Moffitt
Dave Russell
Dave Warner
Dean Seirafi
Drew Brisco
Dustin Todd
Edmund Poliks
Jeremy Soria
John Bernales
Julie Klos
Megan Gale
Michael Russell
Michelle Armstrong
Nathaniel Silverthorn
Quentin Harris
Quincy Riddick
Richard Bradford
Roy Duran
Samantha Frye
Stephen Clark
Tiffany Firman
Will Manus

We'll just have to wait and see who is who and what videos are offered.

In a weird way, it looks like they're doing more to ruin the contest than help it by these rules. My first gripe was the categories. I didn't notice the format restriction until now. Still, I can't tell if they worded it badly; maybe meaning they "prefer" mpeg2 over all formats.

I should check into that...

Here's the explanation I found.

(from the NekoCon forums)
...format conversion is spotty as best, so it would be better for the creator to do it in format before submitting it than the AMV contest admin having to reformat who knows how many videos. Not to mention conversion is a time-consuming process and there will be many entries. Virtualdub will do MPEG-2 conversion and it's free...

(the official word)
Our contest is mastered to DVD for showing at the convention, which is essentially MPEG-2 with a different header. While we're very capable of converting entries to the target format, our available time to do so is extremely limited between the submission deadline and the actual contest deadline. Plus, when we have converted in the past, we've been really careful to not make technical mistakes like cutting off the video early or interlacing the video, or any one of a thousand other things that can go wrong with re-encoding. But sometimes we slip up, and the entry can be of less quality than would be acceptable to the creator or to the audience.

Basically, while we can make conversions, we make no guarantees about their quality. If you absolutely need to have someone else do it for you, we ask that you arrange it with us ahead of time by emailing AMV@nekocon.com.

I guess all that's left to do now is deal with the tension as we wait for the list of finalists. Any idea when we might know?

Also...of all among us who submitted, how close to the deadline was your last entry? Mine finished uploading 7 minutes before midnight Sunday...
