THE RETURN of AWA MASTERS
This announcement was originally made at AWA last year, but I figure it's a good idea to post again this far in advance just to make sure everyone hears in time, in case they plan on participating.
Thus: Yes, the Masters' contest at AWA is returning.
The rules haven't been totally finalized, but should be nearly identical to the previous rules from two years ago. In short: one video per contestant, must be previously unreleased (not competed or exhibited elsewhere). Any video source, any audio source, any rating. Judged blindly, so provide a copy without any studio ID attached.
One judge (myself) one winner.
In the long term, depending on how successful the returning Masters' is, we intend to run the contest every other year. Previously, while the skill of the winners remained at nosebleed dizzying heights, competiton for the winner's rank got noticeably thinner each year. We thought the contest had tired itself out, and decided to retire it; announcing a "last" Masters' contest the next year. However, the turnout for that contest, and protests following, required a reconsidering. By having it every other year, I think it will encourage intense participation on a more manageable schedule, rather than everyone just thinking "I'll just wait till next year" and having a lackluster competition as a result. We'll see how well it works.
Unfortunately, another announcement must go along with this:
No, there will be no SAST contest this coming year.
This is not due to any trouble with the contest itself (ran much more smoothly than anticipated), nor any commentary on the quality therein (some truly hilarious entries), but simply that, if Masters' returns, we've got no place to show SAST. I've put an absolute limit of three hours on the screening time in main, with an hour for each contest (the absolute longest you can get an audience to sit still), so there's simply no room to screen an SAST compillation this year. If there is still interest, it may return in place of Masters' the next year.
Further, with the advent of an AMV Hell 4, it's working at cross-purposes to have another SAST this year, since SAST basically ripped off Hell.
I welcome any comments or suggestions to either of these contests. Nothing is set in stone yet with regards to schedule or rules, and I'd be happy to consider any alternates to this arrangement.

One thing with regards to this years contest though. With that rule is that inclusive of AWA 2006 to 2007 or from 2005 to 2007 since there was no masters last year?MCWagner wrote:Correct.AtomX wrote:So is the rule still in effect that in order to enter, you still need to have won an award in an AMV contest prior to entering Masters?

What exactly is your question? The lack of a masters contest last year is irrelevant to the entry requirement. I don't have a copy of the old rules in front of me but, in summary, it boils down to:The Wired Knight wrote: One thing with regards to this years contest though. You must have won a contest in some physical form at some point previous to the submission of your entry. It could be one month previous, it could be one decade previous. Web only contests and honorable mentions are excluded, directors perogative on final say yada yada yada. That's also why you're required to submit the winning video along with the masters entry, to validate your credentials per se. Unless I missed something in the rules, you don't have to 'revalidate' yourself in the period between individual runs of the masters contests.
Btw, as an Augusta native, I shudder every time I write that out, thinking the Augusta National lawyers are going to track me down and kill me in my sleep, having lived through the copyright purge of the late 80's...
