AWA 11 [2005]

This forum is for the announcement and discussion of anime music video contests.

I feel like I should point out this line from the "long" version of the rules:

"...this coming year will see the final Masters’ contest. There is a small chance that a profoundly renewed interest in the contest by the AMV community would convince us to keep it going a while longer, but, short of that, this will be the last opportunity to win the coveted Masters’ jacket."

The decision to drop Master's really is based on a percieved dropping-off of interest. If that suddenly reversed, we'd re-institute the contest. But I don't want this to look like a "schtick" to drum up support. Submit if you really are interested, but don't submit just because you want to prop up the contest for tradition's sake. If there isn't enough interest left, we should end it before all interest is gone.

Got an idea for Pro and send the other one to Expo, and if I feel lke I did a damn good job on another video, sending it to Masters !

But, I do have 2 vids in the making.

1) The vid I hope to complete in time to submit uses a widescreen aspect ratio. Would anamorphic or hard-letterboxed, non-anamorphic mpeg2 be preferable?

2) Does your playback system handle uncompressed PCM (.wav) audio, or would .mp2 audio be preferred?

1) Hard Letterbox

2)The end file must be MUXable into 1 file. Uncompressed AC3/PCM (.wav) audio or .mp2 audio should be muxed into the file prior to sending to us.

No problemo :)

Thanks very much for the quick, conscise answer, and for your efforts on behalf of AWA's VAT.

I've looked up to the Masters' as being sort of the AMV world's equivalent of winning the Oscar for Best Picture.

I'm not qualified to enter, but I'd sort of held on to the thought of someday being able to do so, with a vid I was truly proud of, and considered worthy of submission to it.

You and the other folks on staff certainly are in a better position to make such judgements as to the merits of whether it would be best to continue it or not. Either way, AWA will always be something I look forward to with great anticipation, as long as I'm even slightly interested in video editing.

Hopefully time and finances will allow me to thank you in person for a great con and all the hard work this September.

Actually, I don't think the masters needs to go away... However, maybe a bit of retooling it would work out better. I myself have some suggestions, but I'll just wait to see once this year's are over...

Now, if only I could get a video done up in time for the Masters dince I have entered the contest in years past....

Maybe the lack of interest is the mass amount of people who aren't eligible to enter. :?

Cons are getting more unpredictable nowadays.

Same here, the Masters have always struck me as being extremely prestegious. I belive that AWA is on the top of a very short list of contests with the prestige to hold such an event and that it is uniqe in the AMV world.

When I won a category at AWA last year, I was estatic at being eligable for the Masters compitition. Even if my next video is my best work yet and stands a good chance at winning awards at this or other cons I would give them up just to enter the Masters and compete head to head against the editors that I most respect.

I suspect it's more the quality of the entries rather than the absolute number. My impression is that people are more willing to spend time and effort for contests like the AWA Pro, Otakon, or AX where winning has a greater emotional payoff.

We try to accomodate people by playing their video when they are present. If you come up and talk to us, we'll play the video when you're in the room.

Check in early, though. If you come late in the day we might have already played your video, and we can't re-play videos.

Agreed. Throughout my years of entering AWA Masters, I have always made an effort to use any and every original idea I've ever had when it comes to AMVs. In fact, I think the AWA masters contest brings out the best work of several different AMV Creators.

Alternate Reality, Drunk With Love, and Vash the Desperado....by far I believe they are some of the best AMVs I've ever made and they were made simply for the AWA Masters contests. I hope to do this again this year. I already have a new idea and will be working on it this summer.

So if this really is the last year for it, then I will definetly make it worth your while MCWagner =).

Now if you could just get Jbone to take the contest seriously...you wouldn't have to sit through "Output Input Translation: for six minutes again Haha.
