Sakura-Con Feedback

Postby Seijin_Dinger » Tue Apr 12, 2005 1:33 am

if at all possible could I please get some constructive feedback posted in the Assault and Flattery section of the Sakura-Con Message Board? I am asking this so I can have a nice consolidated list of suggestions to help the next coordinator improve the contest. If you have talked to me with ideas etc please also put them there so I can just print off from 1 thread in 1 location.

I have one thing to say about improvement:

Quit showing videos that use the same Anime clips in them! It's really annoying.

I can understand having vids that are from the same Anime, but to use nearly
the exact same scenes in more than one? UGH! It's so lame.....

And I think it'd be fair if there was a new category - Fairly Decent Job!

That way AMVs that couldn't make it to the other categories, but were done
well or their makers were put through a crapload of grief to submit them,
could have the opportunity to still win an award and get their vid seen...

(case in point: Majin Dan's "Trial By Combat" Naruto video... *sigh*)

Well, the contest staff can't determine what videos they receive. Blame the creators for that.

(Like the surplus of Cowboy Bebop videos that had all those same scenes from the last episode in Otakon 2004's contest.)

Yeah, and I'm kind of sick of that dancing scene in EVA too.

i have to say that Dan's Trial by Combat video should have been in the contest. I submitted 3 videos and were cut out of the contest. His naruto video is probably one of the best video. It should have been in the contest.

That would basically be an award congratulating someone for making a mediocre video, and I don't think that anyone would want to recieve that (your video was just o.k., congrats!).

I think we watched different videos. The Trial by Combat that I saw was 6+ minutes long and boring as hell.

so what you are saying is that if next year you happen to use a anime clips that a few others use, your video should not be shown regarless of how good it is  ... Quite honestly this has nothing to do with how good a video is and if it deserves to be shown or not... Any contest that look at it that way I would not want to enter.

Quite honestly, that sounds like your bitter about that particular video not being show. Granted, It would be great if it was possible to have contrsts show all thie entires in the finals, but this is just not possible anymore. Besides, accroding to your theory, there were already a lot of Naruto videos so they should not of been shown anyway since they use the same anime clips most likely

Honestly, I understant your fustration, but it's not up to the contest to start cutting video just because they use a particular anime. In all fairness to Sakura-Con, overall the finals had a decent set of videos IMHO...

What I meant by that, is they should take all the AMVs that use the same
Anime clips in them, and then vote on which is the best and worthy of putting
in the contest. It may be tedious, but it'd certainly narrow things down a bit.

And those Naruto vids did not use the same clips, btw. They were all unique.

Yeah, I'm disappointed about Majin Dan's vid - especially since he had me
submit it for him and I had to go through some serious crap to upload it, not
to mention that it was submitted under my AMV crewtitle (K.R.L. Productions)

What your saying is even worse... so if the only good videos happen to feature a few of the same clips only one should make the contest!! really sad to see this kind of deductive reasoning as I myself will NEVER judge a video just because it uses a few similar clips...

Frankly if your that dissapointed, then just submit it to another contest. If the video is THAT good as you claim it to be, then it should have not trouble getting into the finals somewhere else... Quite honestly, I always feel honored to make the finals and wouldn't keep bringing up if a video did not make it....

Anyway, I don't want to diverge from what this thread is about "feedback" for Sakura-Con's contest so unless there anything else that needs to be added to this, I consider this issue closed....

Really nobody can help if a certain show gets used multiple times. And well.... in this case a problem showed up as one of the shows with multiple entries happened to be a 24 minute movie. You watch two hoshi no koe vids and you will unfortunately end up seeing most of the movie.

Oh yes and for the record I was one of the several Hoshi no Koe vids. I wasn't competing, it was in exhibition. And I had seen burntoast's video and it was damn good and probably deserved to get in.

But yes as yet another coordinator (Ohayocon and Tekkoshocon) speaks up, we have no say on what kinda of videos we get. I've had 4 or 5 Naruto videos in Tekko's contest..... a con of 1300 people. They made it in because they simply were good enough and also they followed the rules specified.

And this coming from someone who is absolutely sick and tired of naruto amv's.

From what I understand is that a panel of 5 staffers went through the videos submitted and voted what ones should have gone in. I think it was a 3/5th majority but Dinger knows better than I do on how the voting was conducted.

So if your video did not make it in, it was not because of a single coordinator. Obviously it was not good enough to pass a full panel of judges or the other entries were so good that it just could not fit due to time constraints. Simple as that.

So really stop whining on such matters. Feedback really has to deal with how the contest was presented and handled. Not whining because so and so's video didn't make the cut.

And since I was not in attendance for the contest I can't give much for feedback only that I do know that a number of videos in drama (by the way Shinsei, Vlad and I both had videos that had this problem) had playback issues where the audio lost synch with the video slightly. That can be troublesome for videos that rely on synch but it can certainly be worked on next year.

Can't give any suggestions though since I don't know what the playback equipment was.

yes it was a 3/5 majority and of the pannel there were 3 who were convention Executives. The reason I asked Executives to sit on the panel was because they have overall say over the convention and how it is run.

I didnt want to cut any videos but when faced with 5 and a half hours of AMVs... well cuts had to happen
