Nice mood. Needs slow, gentler transitions
This one needed a softer touch: fewer cuts, much longer crossfades. AMV makers seem to have a reluctance for long (several seconds) transitions even though they are very common in real movies.

25. Idealistic Dreamer (Last Exile)
(Imagine) Out of synch on piano notes. Photoshop cutouts: needs blur edge.
As long as I'm making confessions...<cough> I don't like Lennon's "Imagine". This song was decomposing even when I was in high school. Incineration in a nuclear furnace is called for, but probably wouldn't work. <end of rant> It's a nice enough video; not terribly inspiring, but that's me. Oh, and the figure cutouts really need feathering or drop shadows or something.

I hate my Last Exile vid. A couple were a tad off although it should not have been off a ton. I agree with all your problems though and I frankly after 8 months stopped caring and just wanted it done for the sake of getting done. But yeah it was not a job I am proud of. I refused to subject it on other cons but Dinger and I did an exchange and the Hoshi no Koe one had actually been submitted to a couple more cons while the other one I kept at home. So bash away.

The Hoshi no Koe one..... here was the problem with using longer transitions was that the movie consists of a lot of very short scenes. I had slowed quite a bit down as much before it became obvious. The first transition in particular I always wished could have taken longer. However, if I tried it got jerky.

And Actually if anything the video is considered way too slow for most peoples' tastes. Also on long fades in music videos in general it is hard because music is often much quicker paced than a movie.

So it took a lot of time adjustments and cycling of frames (last no message screen you can tell and oddly it was accidental synch) Since some of the scenes were a matter of a few frames. I doubt I will find a more difficult anime to edit with.

Edit: And Dinger is telling me I was 3-5 frames or so off in playback so it was just enough to mess with the piano keys a bit..... Oh well no harm done. Next year.

So much pressure and high expectations :(

Well, actually, we did not meet. So, you don't need to worry about your memory.

I was not in the group of creators at the showing. Couldn't remember where we were supposed to meet and didn't want to lose my place in line. It turns out I was a few rows behind the right screen which was probably better than being up front.

On Saturday, I waited a few minutes after your panel was done, but there was a group of people waiting to talk to you. Then a Japanese woman showed up with "panelist" on her badge and I figured it was time to vacate, especially since I needed to be across town by dinner time.

It was a good panel, by the way. A little light for long-time otaku, but for an average con-goer, someone who has maybe seen a couple of the Disney/Ghibli DVDs, it should have been just right.

I know exactly what you mean. There are times when I think that this is the fundamental problem with making AMVs: clips that are too short for what you need. I have a vid up at Anime North right now that has average scene length between 5 and 10 seconds with transitions running in the 2-5 second range. I had to pull all sorts of tricks to get it done. It took awhile, but it turned out all right.

awww, that kind of sucks... I drove all that way to meet everyone and not end up talking with you if not for a few minutes... Ahh well, atleast you know what I look like now

IN terms of the panel.. given about 50 minutes and the age and diversity of the audiance, making it too complex would of not worked.. But it should of been somewhat educational

Sorry that I didn't get to attend the panel.....when was it?

Chances are I was either at a photoshoot or hanging out with friends.

*sigh* I really wish they'd forgotten that stupid "Chibi Things" vid and had
Majin Dan's vid shown in its place. "Trial By Combat" is an awesome vid...

Ok I have sat through this long enough

First off Majin Dan's Video was LONG and had no point, it nearly put all 5 people on the voting panel to sleep.

Secondly if you are this mad about a frends video not being shown then you are being too superficial. You need to Grow up, and GET OVER IT.

Also if you think I did a poor job this year, you can anways apply to do the contest yourself next year
