Otakucon review: did they overhype and fail to deliver?

Postby DrngdKreationz » Sun Dec 19, 2004 3:55 am

Ok guys I just got back from an hour and a half drive from deep miami and i'm pretty tired so bear with me. I'll keep the personal bitch rant out of this and just keep to as much contrsuctive crit as i can

I understand this is a young con so I am ok with a few things going wrong here and there.. the Webcast they were advertising as I heard from the guy running the AMV competition could not get launched properly. and thats ok shit happens.

AMV comp falls behind an hour, also shit that just happens. but here is where i think things could have been handled differently. They delivered on the planned tribute to the "oldies" ( Kusoyaro/ Demoss/ Caldwell/ AD/ and i think a few others) in the main room pushing the AMV competition yet another hour behind. (no disrespect to the editors listed above) but The "tribute" could have been moved to the "looped videos Expo room" in order to put things closer to their original track. now because the AMV comp was now 2 hours late they showed only the first half of the judged entries (unfortunately some of the crowd doesn't like to see 2-3 vids to the same anime/ or by the same creator in a row a more diverse selection would have been more appropriate to keep the crowd into it) and then show the other half after the cosplay contest (which ran overtime which pushed the AMV competition out of saturday.. period)

now the only real "complaint" I would have is this:
It's great to have all of your staff on the same page. everyone i spoke with did have a great understanding of the printed schedule but because of typical con delays the printed schedule was no longer the correct information it seemed that nobody knew what was going on since the schedule was pretty much shot. unless 1 of 2 people who actually knew were in arms reach. if something that derails your con schedule happens some sort of re-group meeting should take some place to keep your staff upto date on what the new standard is.

so far there has been no winners posted for AMV and we still have the rest of sunday to find out. Hopefully you guys will be able to regroup tonight and get the rest of the con moving smoothly as the day goes by. so good luck to anyone who is still waiting on the results.

Again I'm writing this to be as constructive and positive about the situation as i can.

:D

This seems like something more appropriate for the OtakuCon forum than here...

The con was very poorly run and had alot of downfalls AMV wise (Staying on topic) Not only was it horribly under-staffed, but the FTP server that allowed digital uploads for AMVs had no security. One could delete, or modify other users entries without question. Not to mention a con having a "hack in the box" contest got mad when their own server got hacked and the had to re-upload all of their content. Including all the AMVs that were submitted digitally, if you didn't re-upload it, you're out of luck.

dokool

only reason I posted this here was because of the overall skepticism from previous otakucon overhyping posts. they brought their hype here, I figured I would bring some truth to it.

AngelicVirii, when did they get hacked?

About 3 days before the original deadline. 12/7 that was their excuse for "server downtime"

I still however paid for a badge and entered my AMV to support the first year con.

So, um, am I just stupid and overlooking it or was the con allowed to finish without announcing who won the TV?

Well, I talked to Christopher Clai (in charge of technical issues) last night (early this morning, whatever) and he said he'd contact those that had the results for us and try to get the results info posted today, so let's hope he comes through with that.

Well they did announce the winners of the AMV contest about an hour after the costume contest (the convention ran way late). I don't remember the name of the "Best in Show" winner but they did announce it and he was not there (no wonder as this was about 28 hours late in telling us who won).

Oh and another thing about the AMV contest, not only am I sure that they missed/lost peoples amv's because they lost one of my entries (it just dissapeared??) but they also played a corrupted copy (I don't know what happed to it, all my transitions got reversed and whole scenes were cut out of my vid) of another one of my AMV's! I also was told that this copy was the one that was judged as well! :x

They certainly went all out on the prizes for the other catagories, which were very short in list: Best Tech, Best Action, Misc, Best Comedy and Best Drama (which I can tell you who won that one by the way - ME!! :D the only other one I entered that didn't get lost or screwed somehow) I was given a T-shirt (that cost 5$ at the con) and disk #2 and 3 of Last Exile DVD's. The winner of the "Gaming Tourn" for Halo won the complete Box set of MACROSS along with a few Xbox games (that come free with the system when you purchase it) I was told by the winners of that contest. We also had to wait about an hour after the closing ceremony to get our prizes (this was about 10pm Sunday).

I REALLY hope they get it together for the next one (where ever it is) becasue this con really had potential and a lot of things went really BAD for them.

**wonders what would have happed if my OTHER 2 AMVs would have been judged??? ***

Congrats, but there's no chance of remembering the other winners, or the videos, or anything about the videos, or anything, is there?
