Is it actually going to happen this time? I heard about it back in 2003, but it never happend, I'm pretty sure. If it does, it's pretty easy for me to be there. I could enter the contest. I'm skeptical right now.

Wait, what the hell?

I mean, a cash prize sounds pretty sweet, but... there's the seeming contradiction (barring really short videos) I just pointed out, and also... am I reading this right, or is the only way to submit videos by e-mail?

We tried to get off the ground last January, but we couldn't get the hotel contract we wanted, and decided to postpone it for a year. And the result was we have a signed hotel contract giving us single/double rooms for $79+tax a night ($89 triple, $99 quad), which is a darned good rate. You get the convention rate even if you reserve at the last minute, or show up without a reservation and get a room -- if they're not full, and you get a room, you can get the convention rate. Sweet, eh? Rates are good for 3 days before and 3 days after the con, too.

So yes, it's really happening, we're going forward come hell or high water.

(Educate me, please, I'm new to all this: about how many MB or GB is a 6-minute AMV likely to be?)

I believe that we'll also be accepting AMVs via uploading, eventually; Mikal just relocated from up north to So. Calif. and I don't think he's got his new server up and running yet, which is why nothing's been announced about uploading monster files on line.

Or you could burn it to a cd or dvd and send it to our PO Box and I'll get it over to Mikal, that'll work too I suppose.

The answers

Postby DynamicPerformance » Fri Nov 12, 2004 6:41 am

I wanted the 6:00 minute rule to eliminate long AMV's,
Does it really need to be over 6:00 minutes? AMX had a 7:00 minute
limit, but we don't have the security to hold people that extra minute
if they get restless!

The 100MB limit is there to prevent my e-mail server (gmail, or my new
one I am thinking of releasing) from becomming full from ppl
submiting. Its happened before.

With Divx, no movie should be over 100mb, even 10+ minutes.
If you have a diff format, u can always ask if We will be able to accomodate you.

Larger file sizes will only be accepted at the sole
discretion of the administrator, and all of Mikal's decisions are
final.

which implies I CAN allow longer movies. (but PLEASE no 20-minute DBZ/Sailor Moon retrospectives based on "Dark Side of the Moon" by pink floyd)

Thank you,
Mikal Saltveit

P.S. contradiction is b/c of my obviously inferior knowlege of video editing tools, styles and most important codecs. If anyone wants to educate me on the style that are easiyist to play: be my guest[/quote]

A 6-minute high-quality MPEG-2 could be as big as 500 MB.

I believe a 6-minute HuffYUV AVI would probably be 2 or 3 GB.

(I'm talking rough estimates here since I've never made a 6-minute video.)

So if we could burn to CD or DVD and submit that way, that would be much appreciated. :)

I'd go if it wasn't a week after Ushicon... :x

Would Anime LA be interested in showing multieditor projects as well? :D

So, you're telling us here that we're supposed to use a format that the rules say we're not supposed to be using?

Seriously. I have no faith in a contest coordinator who doesn't even try to learn how video works until after he's posted the contest rules.

I also have no faith in a contest coordinator who uses 'net-speak and who doesn't publicly communicate using properly-spelled words, but that's another issue entirely.

what ever happened to entering for fun.

usually its better to help someone and inform them of, what is believed to be correct procedures, instead of being critical. why not help so you can make the contest better. with out contest after all, how would we showcase?

That is why he ask for any of those willing to educate him is welcome.

if you have any questions dynamicperfomance, you know my email.

Someone who himself speeks in broken sentences (half of which I barely understand) is not the person to go to for advice.

And it's not fun when the contest coordinator doesn't know what he or she is doing.

Man, jbone, your vicious.
if you can't understand ray, your gonna have ALOT of problems with people out in the real world. Very few people speak good english. Especially in Southern-California.
in response to:
So, you're telling us here that we're supposed to use a format that the rules say we're not supposed to be using?

I say:
Recommended Formats for AMV submission are as follows
burn!
If your AMV runs in a different format than those recommended, please also include any necessary codecs, players and important instructions or we will likely be unable to play your AMV in the contest.
double burn!

As my friend Travinator said on a diff forum:
If you're going to correct every one of Dynamicman's typos, you're going to be _very_ busy, Zer...

Online posts are not essays! I'm sorry if I can't take the time to write right english :) I am in college, and midterms and deadlines control my schedule. I'm a volunteer, just like the rest of the staff, and we're not getting payed. Which means, when my boss at work tells me to do something, I can't say: But I have to do some work for Anime-LA.
I'd get fired so fast! So i'll fit it in somehow.

We need everyone's help to make this work. So please, submit video's.

the point of "No videos over 100mb" is to keep my server open for class e-mails. if you fill up my server with a gigantic attatchment, and I miss a TBA test date, I WILL fry your bios!
A 6-minute high-quality MPEG-2 could be as big as 500 MB.

I believe a 6-minute HuffYUV AVI would probably be 2 or 3 GB.

If u need help making your movie smaller, I DO understand compression.
try reducing the dimensions of the output file. Find the point where quality + size is best. Also, you can zip/rar/tarball the file to make it fit. Or try divx as a codec.

(I'm talking rough estimates here since I've never made a 6-minute video.)
I have never either, I try to make my movies 3-4 minutes, fairly short, to the point, and it keeps the AMV from becomming repititious.

So if we could burn to CD or DVD and submit that way, that would be much appreciated.

Sure thing, the site will soon be updated with a snail mail address you can send it to. However, as with my e-mail, IT CAN BECOME OVERFILLED. After that, my dorm tosses mail. and most mail arrives here on monday, so... e-mail me first.

Thank you all,
Mikal Saltveit

Obviously you don't understand compression if you're limiting entry sizes to 100mb. If people make the file smaller than 100MB, then you'll have lots of trouble converting it into a format suitable for the contest.

In addition, *nobody* emails huge files. I don't think I've ever emailed something larger than an mp3, and that was YEARS ago.

A contest run more incompetently than Otakon, who would have imagined...
