I am arranging an AMV contest, and I want to invent a new category. I want to run 4 categories, two are 'standard' but two are 'something different.'
1) "Action & Technical Effects" (Most people can figure this one out.)
2) "Traditional Japanese Setting"
This is one 'new' one, but already well-defined. The idea here is to bring out the Japanese-ness of anime. How is Japanese culture expressed thorugh anime, subtly or more obviously (at the choice of the AMV creator.) This could be a walk back in time using any of the series set in earlier times: Kenshin, SDK, Hakkenden, Shura no Toki, Kai Doh Maru, etc, or it could be a contemporary Japanese setting such as Tokyo Godfathers or Gokusen, or even a bit of SF - such as Gasaraki, which despite being a mecha-type story, has lots of traditional Japanese elements, dynastic family plots, costuming, rituals, etc. Another way to describe this goal is to is bring out something that is 'there' in anime but 'not there' in non-Japanese works like Mulan, Titan AE, or Invader Zim.
3) [ >> HERE'S THE CATEGORY I NEED TO DEFINE. << ]
4) Comedy, Parody Movie Trailers and Parody Commercials
(this one we know again already.)
Basically I am trying to break up the typical 'lull before the storm' category known as Drama/Romance. This is typically a lower energy category than Action, ka-pow digital effects, or bust-a-gut comedy jokes and surprises. But I am trying to avoid an outright snoozer category.
What would be an interesting category for slot 3?
Here's another way to phrase the question:
Besides action, snazzy effects, great jokes, or cool Japanese stuff,
what other cool, notable and definable types of anime and AMV's are there?
