Which one do you recommend

Postby Pyle » Tue Sep 14, 2004 9:56 pm

I finally have started working on a video I think is worthy enough for a con. It's the first time I've even considered submitting one, either for fear it's not good enough or couldn't mail it. Which one do you recommend I should enter.

I hate feeling this stupid

You can't help me, my self-esteem is lower then that of a rock. Which, theoretically, has none :)

One that you can attend. It's a lot more fun being able to sit there and see your video played on the big screen in front of thousands (or hundreds) than to have to sit at home wondering all weekend long how your video did.

Unfortunately, I have no idea where you live, so I can't suggest specific cons.

agreed, i was scared *YES I SAID I WAS SCARED!* to enter awa last year, i didnt want to enter unless i was going, which wasnt planned, but i finally got the balls to enter my amvs into a contest in florida * a small con with only a handful of amv creators* i won the BEST OVERALL contest, which was shocking at first... anyways, the moral of the story is, get sum balls, no body wants to lose, but its a chance you gotta take, not very man bad vids are remembered, so even if they didnt like your vid, they wouldnt go up to you and kill you for it! but if they even somewhat liked it, then people would like you... think about that... now, get some balls, and enter a contest! you can do it!!

I'm with Scintilla on this one. the best experience you can have is entering it in a contest you know you can attend. the satisfaction of seeing your video on a big screen and hearing the crowd's response is something worth working for. (though I have experienced different kinds of amv crowds, some of which I will stay away from due to a lingering headache afterwards.)

ask around and keep your eyes open for contests in your area. if you mentioned where you live, somebody is sure to know of the closest con and what their contest is like.

if you can't make it the con, the next best thing is getting your video out there where people can enjoy it. yeah, it's annoying not knowing how it did or what the crowd thought, and when I sent a couple videos to MTAC this year (since they were asking for more submissions) I knew I wouldn't be there. it didn't stop me though, and even though I never got to see Mexican Wine on the big screen, I did see it mentioned in a few con reviews on the net later on, and that is an equally good feeling.

Yeah submit it a couple cons, if you can make any of them all the better.

There's a con virtually every week so there is hardly a shortage no matter where you live or what time of the year. Well.... those in Kansas or Montana are kinda screwed but you get the idea.

To get an idea on some of the cons I recommend checking out fansview as that site has links for virtually every convention in the country. See what cons are coming up you might be able to attend or would like to submit to and see what their specific rules and dates are. Follow all the rules (always makes contest coordinators happy) and give it a shot. There's nothing to lose save maybe 2 dollars in a disk and postage.

But good luck with your video. Just have fun with things and it should be fine.

yeah, good idea. another thing to keep in mind is that every con is going to have a different deadline. I've been in contests where I needed to upload my video over a month before, and even some where I only had to bring my video to the con in person and hand it in that morning. lol.

even when you don't have a video ready to compete with, it's a good idea to look at the cons and what deadline are coming up. if you wait till you have a video ready, you may miss a local contest simply because you didn't know about the deadline early enough. also, knowing what deadlines are approaching might be the extra push you need to get a video done sometimes. it's worked for me. ^_^

If your vid sucks, you probably don't wanna send it to a con that you can attend... you might not WANT to see the reaction
Heh, I highly doubt that your video would suck that badly though, especially with you feeling that its "worthy" of a con showing.

I love in a town with 3000 people. It's name is Orofino. It's in the state of godamnded IDAHO.

The closest I'll get is Seattle. I just got my driver's permit. Chances are slim, to non3.

Thanks for the advice either way :)

Well, if that's the case, then I say send to a middling-to-large con that either takes FTP or isn't so far away that shipping would cost too much. The more exposure, the better. :)

(Of course, if you're not that confident about it, you might want to send it to a contest that has a policy of playing all accepted videos...)

Poor Mr. pilkington. Now I'm even more afraid of Contests, Conventions, and any other event that might put me within five miles of you people.
